Senior Legal Counsel

Introduction to the job

We are hiring a Senior legal counsel with a strong focus on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) to join our Legal Corporate & ESG Team. You'll play a key role in supporting ASML's ambitious ESG strategy, as outlined in our 2024 Annual Report, and act as a trusted legal advisor to our ESG leadership and other internal stakeholders.

ASML's Legal & Compliance Department ("L&C") is responsible for defining and implementing ASML's worldwide legal and compliance strategy. We bear the responsibility for all ASML entities worldwide to comply with international laws and regulations, in order to minimize legal risks and to maximize legal and commercial opportunities.

Role and responsibilities

As part of the Legal Corporate & ESG Team you will be involved in a wide area of Corporate & ESG matters. Your responsibilities include:

• Acting as the trusted business partner to the leadership of the ESG Department and, where relevant, other sectors involved in driving and implementing our ESG strategy
• Monitoring legislative developments in the area of ESG and creating awareness and understanding of their implications within L&C and ASML
• Coordinating and aligning on ESG matters with other L&C experts (e.g. on human rights, product regulatory and EHS requirements)
• Be the legal expert regarding the environmental aspects of laws like Deforestation Regulation, CSDDD, Batteries Regulation, Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation etc.
• Collaborating towards the implementation of changes to ASML's strategy, policies and procedures in the field of ESG, where required, in close collaboration with internal stakeholders.
• Support the wider Corporate & ESG team in other matters on an ad-hoc basis

Education and experience

• A Master of Laws and 8+ years of relevant experience in an international legal/business environment, either as in-house legal counsel or within a law firm
• Strong personal affinity with and interest in ESG
• Proven track record with respect to corporate sustainability, including the interpretation of laws, in particular environmental and other ESG laws; experience in general corporate law is a plus
• Familiarity with other ESG concepts such as supply chain due diligence, conflict minerals, diversity and with ESG disclosure and reporting including CSRD and EU Taxonomy
• Appreciation of legal and litigation risks in relation to ESG

• Ability to clearly communicate and explain legal issues to non-lawyers;
• Excellent drafting skills;
• Business sense, with the ability to connect and manage people and to look beyond the legal scope;
• Proactive and pragmatic, with sound business judgment
• Multicultural and multidisciplinary experience and understanding;
• Highly motivated and pro-active professional;
• Ability to operate under (time) pressure in a demanding and fast paced work environment;
• Capable of working in a matrix organization;
• Strong project management skills;
• Tech-savviness is a plus.

Other information

The role involves working with colleagues all over the world, from factory floor to (executive) management often in close collaboration with colleagues from various functions. The Senior Legal Counsel - Corporate & ESG with a focus on sustainability and ESG will be based in Veldhoven (NL) and will report to the Head of Legal - Corporate & ESG.

The Legal & Compliance Department consists of a team of highly empowered, business oriented lawyers, compliance officers, privacy professionals, paralegals and assistants, working across the globe, accountable for achieving exceptional results.
