Locum Consultant in Vascular & Endovascular Surgery

The Thames Valley Vascular Network (TVVN) provides care to a population of just over 2.2million across Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire & Berkshire. The Network consists of three NHS trusts: Bucknighshire Healthcare NHS Trust, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and Royal Berkshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The postholder will work at John Radcliffe Hospital and cover the network.

Main duties of the job

The postholder's duties include covering the full range of elective and emergency endovascular and open surgery in Oxford and at partner hospitals. This may involve management of paediatric cases and providing cross cover for leave. The Consultant of the Week arrangement handles on call cover and in patient responsibility when the postholder is off site.

Key procedures:

  • Aortic disorders - open and endovascular, including complex repairs, with collaboration with cardiac service.
  • Carotid endarterectomy - one of the busiest centres, including carotid stenting.
  • Peripheral vascular disease - including diabetic foot, in partnership with Oxford Bone Infection Unit and OCDEM.
  • Venous disease - tertiary deep venous service using primarily endovascular techniques.
Research and Teaching

The postholder will participate in teaching programmes for clinical students and junior doctors. Research is integral, and contributions to teaching, training and research will be reviewed in the job plan.

Personal and Professional Development

Mentoring will be provided by a senior department member and professional development supported to maintain up to date practice. The Trust supports revalidation processes.

Job plan

10 programmed activities per week: 8.5 direct clinical care and 1.5 support activities. The job plan will be reviewed within 6-12 months.

Person Specification Qualifications / Training
  • GMC registration - licenced to practice.
  • Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent.
  • Full specialist registration with GMC equivalent to CCT/Portfolio pathway (achieved within 6 months of interview).
  • Specialist training in vascular surgery.
  • UK trained applicants must have a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or be within six months of award. Non UK applicants must demonstrate equivalence to UK CCT.
  • Higher research degree - PhD or UK MD.
Other Requirements
  • Valid driving licence.
Experience
  • General training in vascular surgery to specialist level with evidence of excellent clinical skills.
  • Ability to make consultant level decisions and work independently.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Excellent leadership, organisational, communication, professional and personal skills.
  • Strong interpersonal relationships across a large organisation.
  • Good spoken and written English.
  • Experience teaching undergraduates and trainees.
  • Experience of clinical audit with completed audits.
  • Research publications in peer reviewed journals.
  • Knowledge of NHS organisation and government agenda for centralisation.
  • Management training and experience.

Salary

£113,565 to £150,569 per annum pro rata.
