A dedicated and experienced Consultant in Obstetrics and Gynaecology to provide high-quality care across antenatal, intrapartum, postnatal, and gynaecological services at Sunderland Hospital. Responsible for managing both elective and emergency obstetric and gynaecology cases, participating in labour ward cover, outpatient clinics, theatre sessions, ward rounds, and multidisciplinary team meetings.
Candidates must demonstrate strong clinical leadership with the ability to work effectively within a busy multidisciplinary team, including midwives, junior doctors, anaesthetists, neonatologists, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals. Maintain excellent communication skills and contribute positively to patient safety, service improvement, and teaching/training activities.
A flexible and hardworking clinician with the ability to adapt to changing service demands, rota requirements, and high pressure clinical environments. Committed to collaborative team working, delivering compassionate patient centred care, and supporting colleagues to ensure efficient and effective department functioning at all times.

- Experience in emergency obstetrics and general gynaecology
- Ability to supervise and support junior medical staff
- Holder of MRCOG, eligible for the GMC Specialist Register in Obstetrics and Gynaecology within six months of interview
- Work on a 1:16 rota covering both Obstetrics and Gynaecology
- Covers sessions including medium risk ANC, GOPD, Caesarean section lists, Day case Theatre, and possible Maternal medicine / Diabetes ANC
- Labour ward covered with a hot week rotation when the same consultant covers Monday to Friday 8 00 every day
- Weekends split Friday / Sunday and Saturday
- Excellent organisational and communication skills, good team worker, experience in training undergraduates and postgraduates
- Direct involvement in delivery of NIHR portfolio clinical research trials highly desirable
- The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop other special interests based on service requirements

Job responsibilitiesThe successful candidate will be expected to work as a team member to deliver the service contract and to contribute towards strategic planning and development within the Directorate.
The Directorate has a proud record of delivering the contract within budget and aims to maintain this position. The post-holder will be professionally responsible for their particular patient workload but will also be responsible for colleagues' patients while carrying out on call work.
The Directorate expects the post-holder to adhere to principles of practice as set by the GMC and comply with Trust Policies and Procedures.

Qualifications- Full GMC registration
- Relevant CCT or equivalent (equivalence must be confirmed by GMC by date of AAC)
- Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the AAC
- ATSM advanced Labour ward or equivalent experience
- Further Higher Degree, MD or PhD
- Obstetric ATSM or SITM
- Clinical training and experience in general obstetrics and gynaecology equivalent to that required for a UK CCT, including ability to provide delivery suite cover and intrapartum care
- Ability to offer expert opinion on a wide range of emergency / routine cases in obstetrics and gynaecology
- Interest in Clinical Governance and Risk Management
- Experience of supervising junior medical staff
- Experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
- Evidence of commitment to teaching
- Experience in delivering training and education in general Obstetrics and Gynaecology
- Qualification in medical education
- Clinical training and experience in general obstetrics and gynaecology equivalent to that required for a UK CCT, including ability to provide delivery suite cover and intrapartum care
- Ability to offer expert opinion on a wide range of emergency / routine cases in obstetrics and gynaecology
- Interest in Clinical Governance and Risk Management
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical practice
- Involvement in quality and/or service improvement measures
- Ability to undertake multidisciplinary audit
- Demonstrate ability to undertake audit in specialty area
- Completed GCP training and been involved in NIHR portfolio clinical research
- Experience in delivering training and education in general Obstetrics and Gynaecology
- Undertaken research with published papers in refereed journals
- Involvement in relevant laboratory-based research
- Experience in non-NIHR clinical research
- Enthusiasm and ability to work under pressure
- Supportive and tolerant
- Can demonstrate appropriate team and leadership skills
- Caring attitude to patients
- Evidence of understanding of and adherence to principles of Good Medical Practice set out by the GMC
