About the role

We're looking for a highly curious and experienced transactional lawyer to join Definely during a pivotal stage of growth. This unique role bridges the gap between legal domain expertise and product development, requiring someone who can translate complex legal domain knowledge into actionable product insights. You'll work directly with our product, design, and engineering teams in the development and testing of new features to ensure that sophisticated legal judgment and expertise are embedded throughout our AI products and their outputs.

As our Legal Engineer, you'll play a critical role in legal alignment work, product ideation, and product feedback. This is an exceptional opportunity for an ambitious and experienced lawyer with at least 5-6 years post qualification big law firm experience to shape the future of legal AI and drive meaningful innovation in how legal professionals work with complex documents.

What You'll Do:
  • Legal Document Annotation & Quality Assurance: Lead the annotation of complex legal documents to train and improve our AI models, ensuring outputs meet the high standards expected by top-tier legal professionals.

  • Product Development Collaboration: Work closely with product managers, designers, and engineers to provide domain-specific legal expertise that guides feature development and product roadmap decisions.

  • User Experience Enhancement: Provide feedback to identify gaps in our products and propose solutions that address real-world legal workflow challenges

  • Product Ideation & Strategy: Generate innovative product ideas based on your deep understanding of legal domain practice pain points and emerging market needs

  • Quality Control & Testing: Review and validate product outputs to ensure accuracy, relevance, alignment, and practical utility for legal professionals working with complex contracts

  • Cross-functional Communication: Serve as the bridge between technical teams and legal domain expertise, translating complex legal concepts into clear product requirements and vice versa.

  • Market Intelligence: Stay current with legal industry trends, competitor analysis, and emerging technologies to help inform product strategy and development priorities

  • Customer Engagement: Participate in user research, customer calls, and feedback sessions to deeply understand how legal professionals interact with our products and help communicate the value of our products to fellow legal professionals

What You'll Bring:
  • Legal Expertise: Minimum 5-6 years PQE in transactional law at a top-tier law firm with demonstrable expertise in drafting, review, and negotiation of complex contracts.

  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to accuracy and quality, essential for legal document annotation and product validation work.

  • Communication Skills: Exceptional ability to clearly communicate and simplify complex legal concepts for non-legal audiences while translating technical product features into tangible legal workflow benefits

  • Collaborative Spirit: Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in cross-functional teams and comfortable operating in a fast-paced, startup environment

  • Technology Aptitude: Comfort with technology tools and curiosity and willingness to learn new systems; interest in AI in legal practice.

  • Tech Curiosity: Interest in legal innovation and emerging technologies.

  • Analytical Thinking: Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to break down complex legal processes into discrete, actionable product requirements.

  • Product Mindset: Strong interest in product development with the ability to think systematically about user needs, product-market fit, and feature prioritisation.

  • Experience with legal technology tools, document automation, or contract lifecycle management platforms

  • Previous exposure to product management, user experience design, or software development processes.

  • Understanding of AI concepts and their applications in legal technology
