The Opportunity
Martin-Baker is looking for a skilled and motivated individual to join one of our Engineering teams to manage and take responsibility for leading a talented group of engineers, ensuring that products and services are engineered to meet business, customer and regulatory requirements. This will include the development, verification, and ongoing support of complex subsystems.
The role will help prioritise the engineering team with activities and resources in order to get projects to completion within schedule and to an agreed level of maturity. You'll support the programme management function in the identification and management of risk throughout the lifecycle, ensuring that the project deliverables meet both business and customer requirements.
You'll also develop the capabilities of engineers by coaching and sharing your knowledge, promoting continuous professional development and creating an environment that encourages innovation and continual improvement. As a senior member of the engineering team, you'll communicate effectively, professionally and in a timely manner with internal colleagues, external customers and subcontractors.
This role is based at our Denham campus, we offer hybrid working after six months of employment.
About you
You'll have proven experience of managing and developing people to ensure that capabilities across the function are continuously improved, having a clear view on how effective leadership, and in particular, trust plays an important part.
You'll have working knowledge of safety critical systems and a track record of delivering solutions within a regulated industry. Together with significant experience of interfacing and managing internal and external customers/stakeholders, you'll have proven understanding of systems and/or mechanical engineering, ideally within a defence context.
Highly customer focused, you'll have excellent communication and negotiation skills with the ability to work in a dynamic environment, often with parallel objectives.
What you'll do
- Manage the functional group and team leads to ensure a motivated and suitably qualified resource profile exists. Identify appropriate requirements for training and development, securing budget to deliver this.
- Ensure effective conversations are happening at all levels within the function. Actively manage both negative and positive performance to drive effective functional performance.
- Own and drive forward the strategies to maintain and develop the function/capabilities skills and knowledge.
- Own the functions continuous improvement plans and balances the functions resources with the ongoing project needs.
- Provide support to your teams, leveraging your previous experience in the systems, mechanical, software and/or electronics domains.
What we're looking for
- Degree qualified in Engineering, Maths, Physics, or similar, holding Chartered status with an appropriate institution.
- Practiced at leading and managing teams of engineers, ideally across disciplines.
- Experience of supporting design / delivery teams to develop complex, technical solutions in accordance with plans and processes, ideally within defence.
- Experience of working with a variety of internal and external stakeholders of varying seniorities.
- Proficiency in working across the engineering lifecycle and experience of engineering gate reviews and the associated assessment of design compliance.
- Analytical thinker able to develop and communicate difficult/new concepts.
- Ability to cope with complex and uncertain situations.
- Self-motivated with an aptitude for problem solving (strong numerical and analytical ability) and driving difficult issues to conclusion.
- Excellent verbal and written communication / collaboration skills.
