Job Overview

Wrexham County Borough Council is seeking 2 Attendance Support Officers to support the Education Social Work service.

The role will focus on improving pupil attendance, attainment and engagement across schools and educational settings. The successful candidates will work with young people, families, schools and partner agencies to identify barriers to attendance, complete home visits, support Attendance Improvement Plans and help schools improve attendance recording and management.

This role requires experience working with vulnerable or hard-to-reach young people and families, knowledge of education or school services, strong safeguarding awareness and the ability to travel across the County Borough.

This role involves home visits, school-based work, attendance intervention and safeguarding responsibilities.

Candidates must be able to drive and have access to a car.

You must have experience working directly with vulnerable or hard-to-reach groups and be confident engaging with pupils, parents and professionals in challenging situations.

An Enhanced DBS is required.

Candidates without education, school attendance, youth/family support, safeguarding or similar experience are unlikely to be considered.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with schools, settings, parents and the Education Social Worker team on non-attendance issues
  • Complete home visits to identify reasons for absence
  • Help pupils settle back into school following absence
  • Explain attendance legislation where relevant
  • Mentor and coach pupils around attendance-related concerns
  • Support pupils to resolve issues affecting school attendance
  • Build constructive relationships with parents and carers
  • Complete attendance audits in schools
  • Analyse school attendance processes and procedures
  • Support Attendance Improvement Plans with pupils and families
  • Collate and track attendance data
  • Attend multi-agency meetings where required
  • Report safeguarding concerns in line with procedures
  • Complete correspondence, attendance data, exclusion data and case records
  • Support Youth Justice education work where appropriate

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Knowledge and significant experience of education or school services
  • Knowledge of Education and Social Services law
  • Experience working directly with vulnerable or hard-to-reach groups
  • Experience working in educational settings, including schools or similar settings
  • Ability to understand and use data to improve attendance
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and organise own workload
  • Competent ICT skills
  • Ability to work within legislation, policy and procedures
  • Ability to work collaboratively with professionals and partner agencies
  • Ability to engage effectively with pupils, families and professionals
  • Ability to manage challenging situations calmly and professionally
  • Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality
  • Ability to travel across the County Borough
  • Safeguarding awareness

Qualifications

Essential: At least 5 GCSEs at grade C or above.

Desirable / Equivalent: Level 4 qualification in youth and community work, health and social care, or equivalent specialist experience in school management systems and data profiling.

  • Experience of SIMS Attendance or similar attendance systems
  • Coaching, mentoring or relevant qualification
  • Experience supporting vulnerable young people to improve attendance and engagement
  • Ability to communicate in Welsh
  • Experience supporting Attendance Improvement Plans
  • Experience completing attendance audits
  • Experience working with Youth Justice, social care or safeguarding partners

Candidates must be able to drive and have access to a car.

The role requires working across schools, community settings and home visits. Home visits may involve lone working and challenging family circumstances.

An Enhanced DBS is required.

Interview will be held online via Microsoft Teams.
