Description The College wishes to appoint one 3-hour Stipendiary Lecturer to provide teaching in core areas of Engineering Science. The appointment will be for the academic year 2025-26 in the first instance. Lady Margaret Hall is located in spacious gardens beside the University Parks. The College was founded in 1878 with a dual passion for learning and for equality, specifically making it possible for women to study at Oxford the first time. In 2016, LMH was the first Oxbridge college to a launch a Foundation Year targeted at under-represented but academically able students. We combine consistently high academic standards with a long tradition of being a welcoming, stimulating and inclusive environment.

In 2025 LMH is a thriving co-educational academic community of over 420 undergraduate and some 300 postgraduate students. We have a Governing Body Fellowship of 48 with academics from across all four Divisions of the University. These include Statutory Professors, Tutorial Fellows, Official Fellows and Supernumerary Fellows.

We have around 140 support staff across the College and an additional cohort of some 70 academic staff. We are particularly proud to be the only Oxbridge college to hold the Gold Award from Investors in People for our support staff.

Duties The person appointed will be expected to teach undergraduates studying for the Engineering Science degree at Oxford for an average of three contact hours per week during Full Term. The lecturer should be able to offer high quality tutorials in: Paper P3, Structures and Mechanics, to first-year students, and Paper A3, Structures, Materials and Dynamics, to second-year students. In addition, they will be asked to offer small group tutorials in Paper B2, Engineering in Society, to third-year students. The successful candidate will also be involved with the pastoral care of students reading Engineering Science and to assist in the undergraduate admissions process for Engineering Science at LMH. The role will involve writing reports on TMS (Teaching Management System) for each series of tutorials for each student taught. The appointee will be required to set and mark collections (termly college examinations). The person appointed will be involved in the Admissions process, which will include interviewing candidates for Engineering Science in December. Training is required and will be provided, if this has not already been completed.

The Lecturer will work under the direction of Prof Nick Hankins (Senior Fellow and Tutor in Engineering Science) and the Senior Tutor. The appointment carries with it membership of the College's Education Committee, which meets up to twice a term. The Lecturer is expected to be involved in social events with undergraduates (e.g. the Freshers' Dinner, Scholars' Dinner and the Schools' Dinner) which are funded by the College. It is hoped that the Lecturer will become an active member of the College community and participate fully in the life of the College. A commitment to the intellectual life of the College, beyond tutorial teaching and beyond the prescribed contractual duties, would be an advantage.

LMH has two Tutorial Fellows in Engineering: Professor Nick Hankins and Associate Professor Xiaowen Dong. LMH recruits 6 undergraduates per year. Engineering Science teaching at LMH is also supported by Associate Professor Bartek Papiez and Dr Clare Rees-Zimmerman.
Selection Criteria The successful candidate will:

• Have attained a high level of academic achievement (commensurate with the candidate's career stage);
• Possess the ability or potential to be an effective and inspiring teacher of Engineering Science in the tutorial context. Direct experience of tutorial teaching may be an advantage.
• Have the required knowledge to teach Structures and Mechanics (P3) to first-year students, Structures, Materials and Dynamics (A3) to second years, and Engineering in Society to third years (B2).
• Demonstrate an understanding of the needs of high achieving undergraduates, and a commitment to fostering high academic achievement in undergraduates.
• Possess good communication skills, and have the sensitivity to deal effectively with pastoral duties.
• Be flexible, and possess good organisational skills.
• Show an enthusiasm for involvement with the wider life of the College and the potential to contribute to the intellectual community.

Salary, Benefits and How to Apply The salary will be on the Senior Tutors' Committee scale £8,512 to £9,154 per annum (for 3 hours at 2024/25 rates). This may be subject to adjustment in line with any general cost-of living review of academic salaries which usually take place in October each year. The post is superannuated within the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS).

A research allowance of £183 per annum will be reimbursed on submission of receipts to the Senior Tutor.

The Lecturer will be entitled to weekday lunches in Hall without charge during full term and the vacation, and one free dinner per week during term (this includes Week 0 and Week 9). Other meals may be taken if paid for; all drinks and formal desserts are charged.

The Lecturer may have access to a shared College room but bookable teaching rooms are available. The Lecturer will be eligible for membership of the Senior Common Room at Lady Margaret Hall.

The Lecturer will be entitled to a shared college room for teaching and study purposes. There is no entitlement to sabbatical leave.
