Software Development Manager

Software Development Manager C# / Python / Linux Hybrid

A niche, specialist company based in the south is currently undergoing multiple major projects within various sectors, including large civil and military organizations. They are looking to expand their team with a new hire. Reporting to the Development Director, this position will be the second-most senior within the engineering department.

This role is predominantly remote, with occasional office visits (about once a month). Residing near South-East England is preferable.

You will oversee a department of 15-18 developers, with Lead Developers reporting to you. Your background must be that of a software developer, as demonstrable experience is essential. While this is not a hands-on coding role, you need to understand technical issues, assist the team in problem-solving, and sometimes prototype solutions.

Your daily responsibilities include working with team leads to optimize processes, ensure requirements are clear, and coach where necessary. This is a new position within the organization, not a replacement.

Given the company's involvement in the Defence sector, SC clearance eligibility is required.

Day-to-day Responsibilities

1. Tech Stack: C#, Python, JavaScript frameworks (React, Vue, Angular, etc.)
2. Linux: comfortable, competent, and confident in Linux development
3. Managing a department of 3 teams, totaling approximately 15-18 developers
4. Balancing high-level strategic work with hands-on coaching and mentoring
5. Experience as a developer who has progressed through the ranks and can contribute technically when needed
