Purpose & Scope of role
- To work as a senior member of the Underwriting Teams to meet the Division's origination targets.
- The role specializes in larger, complex transactions (£2.5m+) and involves extensive interaction with stakeholders such as Group Risk, Head of Underwriting, and others involved in complex deal assessments.
- Responsibilities include preparing detailed credit papers for Group submission after face-to-face client interviews and property site visits, which will be UK-wide.
- Aims to deliver favorable customer outcomes in credit assessment and customer experience.
- Analyze and understand credit risks, ensuring compliance with Asset Class and Lending Policies across all lines of defence.
- Embed the Bank and Division's Risk Management Framework within underwriting activities.
- The role holder will exercise delegated lending authority of up to £2.5m and participate in ad hoc projects.
Reporting to the Senior Manager (Specialist Underwriting, Real Estate Underwriting & Completions), key interfaces include Group Credit Risk and the Complex Deal Forum.
- Key relationships include First Line Underwriters, Underwriting team managers, Commercial Property originators, Brokers, Line 1 CP Risk, and Group Credit Risk.
- Authority level: Tier IV (£2.5m) Credit Approval Mandate.
Key Role Responsibilities
- Accountability for assigned cases and mentoring less experienced underwriters.
- Act as a subject matter expert for Credit Risk, supporting team objectives.
- Communicate and escalate risks promptly.
- Report regulatory concerns appropriately.
- Act as a senior underwriter for new credits and reviews.
- Ensure data integrity and process adherence.
- Support setting and monitoring of Credit Risk appetite metrics.
- Provide risk-related training to staff.
Experience:
- Proven experience in Commercial and Residential Investment Property.
- Strong business and financial acumen.
Technical/Specialist Knowledge & Skills:
- Deep knowledge of Commercial Property lending practices, risks, structures, and market dynamics.
- Ability to analyze business financial and non-financial aspects.
- Excellent customer service, presentation, and negotiation skills.
- Experience in strategic reporting at executive levels.
- Thorough understanding of credit risk management and related processes.
- Proven credit-underwriting skills in banking or finance.
- Regulatory compliance knowledge.
- Strong commercial and financial skills, strategic thinking, and business planning capabilities.
- Market insight and knowledge of relevant Acts (Consumer Credit Act, Data Protection Act).
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
- Knowledge of TCF principles.
