Senior Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Advisor Kingston and Richmond NHS Foundation Trust

The EDI Team is dedicated to achieving our Trust's EDI objectives by collaborating with key stakeholders. Our focus is on workforce-related EDI, recognising the importance of addressing inequalities among staff. We work closely with divisional and corporate teams to identify EDI issues and create solutions, while also aligning with the patient EDI function to reduce health disparities in our communities.

Guided by the Equality Act 2010, which protects nine characteristics from discrimination, the Team supports the organisation in fulfilling its statutory duties and improving performance against NHS standards.

The Senior EDI Advisor will report to the Head of EDI and provide expert advice and solutions to support all Directorates and Divisions. They will help embed EDI practices throughout the Trust, working with various stakeholders to foster an inclusive culture. Utilising data and insights, the postholder will contribute to EDI, People and Culture strategies, ensuring compliance with statutory and NHS obligations.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will support corporate business returns such as the Workforce Race Equality Standards (WRES), Workforce Disability Equality Standards (WDES), Gender Pay Gap, and coordinate activities to support the EDI agenda and delivery of national and local priorities.

Engage and collaborate with teams across the organisation to embed EDI values.

Coordinate and deliver EDI activities, including events and workshops.

Support the Head of EDI and colleagues in addressing strategic and operational activities related to inequalities, including de-biasing recruitment, performance management, and employee relations, fostering a Just Culture.

Support and develop Staff Networks.

Act as a point of contact for EDI enquiries.

Job responsibilities

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

General responsibilities

  1. Act as SME on workforce EDI issues, including staff discrimination experiences, bias in processes, and health inequalities.
  2. Maintain comprehensive records of EDI activities, preparing reports and presentations for diverse audiences.
  3. Coordinate meetings and design awareness events.
  4. Support compliance with equality legislation.
  5. Lead on EDI training design, delivery, and evaluation.
  6. Review equality impact assessments, incidents, disciplinary matters, and complaints, providing advice on statutory duties and best practices.
  7. Deliver projects and change programmes, motivating staff and challenging current ways of working.
  8. Manage publicity and promote the EDI work plan with stakeholders.
  9. Organise and deliver EDI programmes and initiatives.
  10. Line manage the Band 4 EDI Administrator, providing supervision, feedback, and development opportunities.
  11. Design and deliver specialist EDI training courses.
  12. Facilitate workshops, coaching, and support for staff and leaders on EDI issues.
Information Management / Analytical
  1. Regularly analyse EDI workforce metrics, including local and national data, to identify issues.
  2. Produce detailed management reports and statistical analyses for various audiences.
  3. Use data insights to support people strategies and address hotspots.
  4. Provide solution-focused advice on people-related matters.
  5. Support managers and staff in managing sensitive EDI issues with analytical judgment.
  6. Ensure high standards of data practice and governance.
  7. Collaborate with HR to develop and coordinate EDI reports at divisional and service levels.
  8. Benchmark Trust performance against NHS peers and develop improvement plans.
  9. Utilise digital tools to create reports, manage project data, and present information visually.
  10. Evaluate and improve EDI training effectiveness.
  11. Assist in analysing internal and external data, including demographic and survey data, for strategic decision-making.
  12. Support staff survey analysis to monitor progress and areas for improvement.
Stakeholder Engagement
  1. Collaborate with HR, Medical Staffing, Learning & OD, and Wellbeing teams to embed EDI in all activities.
  2. Work with external bodies and community organisations representing protected groups.
  3. Partner with recruitment and medical staffing to de-bias selection processes.
  4. Support employee relations teams to embed a just, learning culture.
  5. Build relationships with staff networks and support their development.
  6. Engage with Trade Unions and Freedom to Speak Up Guardians on EDI issues.
  7. Work with Learning and Education teams to develop EDI interventions.
Planning
  1. Develop and implement EDI work plans with senior colleagues.
  2. Identify and recommend improvements to sustain EDI initiatives.
  3. Stay informed on national EDI policies, best practices, and targets, proposing policy updates as needed.
Education and Training / Self-Development
  1. Commit to ongoing learning and skill development.
  2. Identify personal training needs and pursue relevant courses.
  3. Attend mandatory training and participate in performance reviews.
  4. Follow health and safety policies and organisational policies.
Person Specification
  • Postgraduate/Masters qualification, Level 7 CIPD (or working towards), or equivalent experience.
  • Recognised coaching or leadership qualification, or active CIPD membership.
Experience
  • Experience in a dedicated EDI role.
  • Experience working with managers on EDI issues and developing solutions.
  • Experience designing and evaluating training interventions.
  • Experience advising on complex EDI issues.
  • Experience in NHS acute hospital settings.
  • Experience in workforce, HR, or OD roles.
