Job Description

SAP Archiving Consultant

The role

As an SAP Archiving Consultant, you will help clients manage the life cycle of data held in their SAP systems-from active operational data through archiving, retention and eventual deletion.
This is an early-career SAP role, suitable for someone with up to 2 years of experience, including relevant internships, academic projects or SAP training.
You will work alongside experienced SAP Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) specialists on client projects, developing hands-on expertise in SAP data archiving, ILM, retention management and regulatory compliance.
You are not expected to join as an SAP ILM expert. We are looking for someone with SAP/ERP fundamentals, an understanding or exposure to data archiving concepts, and a strong interest in developing into an SAP ILM and data life cycle specialist.

What you will do

SAP archiving and ILM implementation

You will:

  • Support the design and implementation of SAP data archiving and information life cycle management solutions.
  • Help clients understand which SAP data should be retained, archived or deleted and when.
  • Support the configuration of SAP ILM and/or related archiving solutions.
  • Assist with data archiving and retention-management activities.
  • Support the execution and monitoring of archiving processes.
  • Work with experienced consultants to troubleshoot basic SAP ILM and archiving issues.
  • Document system activities, results and issues.

Data governance and compliance

You will:

  • Support the implementation of data-retention and life cycle rules in SAP.
  • Help translate defined regulatory or company retention requirements into SAP ILM processes.
  • Support projects involving data privacy, retention and regulatory compliance.
  • Develop your knowledge of SAP ILM best practices and relevant data-management regulations.

You are not expected to be a legal or regulatory expert; your role is to understand how defined retention and compliance requirements are implemented within SAP.

Requirements, testing and documentation

You will:

  • Participate in client workshops and meetings.
  • Help gather and document business and technical requirements.
  • Support solution testing and validation.
  • Prepare process documentation, user guides and training materials.
  • Document archiving processes, system activities and test results.
  • Support users and project teams during implementation.

Cross-functional collaboration

You will:

  • Work with SAP functional consultants, technical consultants and client teams.
  • Understand how archiving requirements affect different SAP modules and business processes.
  • Support integration between SAP archiving/ILM solutions and relevant content-management or archive platforms.
  • Contribute to the successful delivery of your assigned project tasks.

What we are looking for

Essential experience and skills

You should have:

  • 0-2 years of SAP or enterprise ERP experience. Relevant internships, academic projects, coursework and professional experience can all be considered.
  • A basic understanding of SAP ERP and/or SAP S/4HANA.
  • A genuine interest in SAP data management, archiving and Information Lifecycle Management.
  • Some familiarity with concepts such as:
    • Data archiving
    • Data retention
    • Data life cycle management
    • Data privacy and compliance
  • Some exposure to SAP ILM, SAP Data Archiving, ArchiveLink, OpenText Content Management or OpenText ArchiveLink through work experience, an internship, academic projects, training or certification.
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Good organisational and written communication skills.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a project team.
  • The ability and willingness to learn new SAP technologies and concepts.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.

Technical knowledge

At this career level, we are looking for foundational knowledge rather than deep technical expertise.
Relevant technologies and concepts include:

  • SAP S/4HANA
  • SAP ECC
  • SAP Information Lifecycle Management (ILM)
  • SAP Data Archiving
  • SAP ArchiveLink
  • OpenText Content Management
  • OpenText ArchiveLink
  • Data retention and life cycle management

You do not need hands-on professional experience with all of these technologies.

Experience that is advantageous

The following would strengthen your profile but is not essential:

  • Hands-on SAP ILM or Data Archiving experience.
  • SAP ILM/Data Archiving training or certification.
  • Basic knowledge of data-related regulatory requirements such as GDPR or SOX.
  • Familiarity with SAP Fiori.
  • Basic ABAP knowledge gained through work, university or self-study.
  • Experience with OpenText or another enterprise content-management/archive platform.
  • Previous experience working on an SAP implementation, migration, upgrade or support project.

What success looks like at Consultant level

You should be able to:

  • Learn quickly: Build deeper expertise in SAP ILM and data archiving through project experience and training.
  • Understand the fundamentals: Explain the basic purpose of archiving, retention and information life cycle management.
  • Execute accurately: Complete assigned configuration, testing, documentation and support activities carefully and reliably.
  • Analyse problems: Investigate basic archiving or ILM issues and work with senior specialists to resolve them.
  • Document clearly: Produce accurate requirements, test results, process documentation and user guidance.
  • Collaborate effectively: Work comfortably with functional, technical and client teams.
  • Develop into a specialist: Gradually take greater ownership of SAP ILM, archiving and data life cycle activities as your experience grows.

This role is best suited to an early-career SAP or ERP professional who wants to specialise in SAP data archiving, Information Lifecycle Management and data retention/compliance. Previous SAP ILM exposure is valuable, but deep ILM expertise is not expected at entry level.
