SAP Archiving Consultant
The role
As an SAP Archiving Consultant, you will help clients manage the life cycle of data held in their SAP systems-from active operational data through archiving, retention and eventual deletion.
This is an early-career SAP role, suitable for someone with up to 2 years of experience, including relevant internships, academic projects or SAP training.
You will work alongside experienced SAP Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) specialists on client projects, developing hands-on expertise in SAP data archiving, ILM, retention management and regulatory compliance.
You are not expected to join as an SAP ILM expert. We are looking for someone with SAP/ERP fundamentals, an understanding or exposure to data archiving concepts, and a strong interest in developing into an SAP ILM and data life cycle specialist.
SAP archiving and ILM implementation
You will:
- Support the design and implementation of SAP data archiving and information life cycle management solutions.
- Help clients understand which SAP data should be retained, archived or deleted and when.
- Support the configuration of SAP ILM and/or related archiving solutions.
- Assist with data archiving and retention-management activities.
- Support the execution and monitoring of archiving processes.
- Work with experienced consultants to troubleshoot basic SAP ILM and archiving issues.
- Document system activities, results and issues.
Data governance and compliance
You will:
- Support the implementation of data-retention and life cycle rules in SAP.
- Help translate defined regulatory or company retention requirements into SAP ILM processes.
- Support projects involving data privacy, retention and regulatory compliance.
- Develop your knowledge of SAP ILM best practices and relevant data-management regulations.
You are not expected to be a legal or regulatory expert; your role is to understand how defined retention and compliance requirements are implemented within SAP.
Requirements, testing and documentationYou will:
- Participate in client workshops and meetings.
- Help gather and document business and technical requirements.
- Support solution testing and validation.
- Prepare process documentation, user guides and training materials.
- Document archiving processes, system activities and test results.
- Support users and project teams during implementation.
Cross-functional collaboration
You will:
- Work with SAP functional consultants, technical consultants and client teams.
- Understand how archiving requirements affect different SAP modules and business processes.
- Support integration between SAP archiving/ILM solutions and relevant content-management or archive platforms.
- Contribute to the successful delivery of your assigned project tasks.
What we are looking for
Essential experience and skills
You should have:
- 0-2 years of SAP or enterprise ERP experience. Relevant internships, academic projects, coursework and professional experience can all be considered.
- A basic understanding of SAP ERP and/or SAP S/4HANA.
- A genuine interest in SAP data management, archiving and Information Lifecycle Management.
- Some familiarity with concepts such as:
- Data archiving
- Data retention
- Data life cycle management
- Data privacy and compliance
- Some exposure to SAP ILM, SAP Data Archiving, ArchiveLink, OpenText Content Management or OpenText ArchiveLink through work experience, an internship, academic projects, training or certification.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Good organisational and written communication skills.
- The ability to work effectively as part of a project team.
- The ability and willingness to learn new SAP technologies and concepts.
- A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
Technical knowledge
At this career level, we are looking for foundational knowledge rather than deep technical expertise.
Relevant technologies and concepts include:

- Data retention and life cycle management
You do not need hands-on professional experience with all of these technologies.
Experience that is advantageousThe following would strengthen your profile but is not essential:
- Hands-on SAP ILM or Data Archiving experience.
- SAP ILM/Data Archiving training or certification.
- Basic knowledge of data-related regulatory requirements such as GDPR or SOX.
- Familiarity with SAP Fiori.
- Basic ABAP knowledge gained through work, university or self-study.
- Experience with OpenText or another enterprise content-management/archive platform.
- Previous experience working on an SAP implementation, migration, upgrade or support project.
What success looks like at Consultant level
You should be able to:
- Learn quickly: Build deeper expertise in SAP ILM and data archiving through project experience and training.
- Understand the fundamentals: Explain the basic purpose of archiving, retention and information life cycle management.
- Execute accurately: Complete assigned configuration, testing, documentation and support activities carefully and reliably.
- Analyse problems: Investigate basic archiving or ILM issues and work with senior specialists to resolve them.
- Document clearly: Produce accurate requirements, test results, process documentation and user guidance.
- Collaborate effectively: Work comfortably with functional, technical and client teams.
- Develop into a specialist: Gradually take greater ownership of SAP ILM, archiving and data life cycle activities as your experience grows.
This role is best suited to an early-career SAP or ERP professional who wants to specialise in SAP data archiving, Information Lifecycle Management and data retention/compliance. Previous SAP ILM exposure is valuable, but deep ILM expertise is not expected at entry level.
