About the roleThe School of Education and Social Work at the University of Sussex is looking for a Research Fellow to join a multi disciplinary, multisite team investigating the shaping of mental health and the mechanisms leading to (un)successful transitions for care experienced young people (ReThink). This short term post is to contribute to the final stages of a longitudinal study of cognitive, social, and service level predictors of the mental health and wellbeing of care experienced young people, funded by the Medical Research Council. The Research Fellow will join a team spanning the University of Sussex, University College London, and the University of Cardiff.
The Fellow will take a key role in the final stages of secondary analysis of administrative, child level datasets about care experienced young people and their experiences of education. The postholder will work closely with the study investigators and research team to support day to day project delivery.
The post offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the final stages of a large scale project that aims to understand what processes are linked to the mental health and wellbeing of care experienced young people and how they manage at two key periods, or 'transitions'. These periods are:
- Moving from primary into secondary education
- Moving into adulthood
Based at the University of Sussex, alongside Co Principal Investigator Professor Lisa Holmes we are looking for somebody to bring:
- Problem solving and organisational skills
- Capacity to work both independently and as part of a team
The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to use and develop their experience and skills in:
- Writing for academic publication and conference presentation
- A range of communication and engagement activities with the wider professional and policy community
We are seeking a post doctoral researcher to join an established research team for the final few months of the ReThink research project. The successful candidate will hold a relevant doctorate (psychology, social work, education or sociology) with post qualification research experience, or equivalent professional experience.
The role requires high level quantitative analysis skills, with expertise in R or SPSS and the ability to apply them convincingly to novel problems and contexts.
Knowledge of the children's social care and/or education system within the UK is required.
The role also requires a candidate who is an ONS accredited researcher to access the relevant project data via the Secure Research Service.
Equal OpportunitiesThe University of Sussex values the diversity of its staff and students, and we welcome applicants from all backgrounds.
