Regional Design Manager

BAM Construction is recruiting a Regional Design Manager to join the Senior Leadership Team based in the Western Region.

Reporting to the Commercial Director you will support the regions activities both strategically and operationally.

You will oversee the design management discipline, digital discipline, and establish and monitor robust strategies for new opportunities during pre-construction, occasionally taking the lead as bid manager or lead Design Manager on a project.

• Actively promote health & safety including designing in health & safety to reduce risk
• Network with designers to support work winning.
• Take the lead on managing and monitoring compliance with the Principal Designers role.
• Actively promote defects avoidance including Designing out Defects
• Assist Construction Directors in managing design discipline staff including staff perform and develop reviews, training and development
• Detailed input into the preparation of pre-qualifications and tenders
• Select and appoint consultants negotiating BAM baseline contract terms and fees in conjunction with the commercial teams
• Monitor and help manage the performance of Design Consultants throughout the project
• Ensure the design management disciple, working with the project teams, achieves deadlines for delivering affordable and robust designs, and regularly reports on the status of all design activities.
• Promote the use of digital construction and BIM L2 including 3D modelling and clash detection
• Active involvement in the development of Design Management within BAM at a national and international level.
• Be part of the London Region Senior Leadership Team to deliver BAM's strategic objectives.

• Experience in managing design teams across a diverse portfolio on projects for a main contractor in the western region.
• Existing personal relationships with leading multi-disciplinary design companies
• The ideal candidate will have strong leadership and management skills with a can do collaborative approach.
• Enthusiastic team player, able to listen, understand, engage and motivate, and with confidence to make decisions when required
• A thorough understanding of both the design and construction processes, and the interface between them
• A good commercial understanding of contracts, procurement routes and risk management
• A commitment to driving designs that support carbon reduction leading to net zero solutions
• Thorough understanding of digital technologies, with a desire to drive improvements and benefits through embracing digital construction
• Excellent communication skills, both at the personal level and more formal reporting level
• Recognised degree qualification or equivalent and CIOB or equivalent is preferable
