The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Locum Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult Inpatient Psychiatry to support an Adult Inpatient Mental Health Service in London.

This opportunity offers a full-time locum contract with a Monday-Friday, 09:00-17:00 schedule, providing structured and consistent work within a busy inpatient environment. It is an excellent opportunity for experienced consultants who are confident managing acute and complex mental health presentations while providing senior clinical leadership within a multidisciplinary team.

You will take clinical responsibility for an inpatient caseload, lead ward-based care, support junior medical staff, and work collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team to ensure the delivery of safe, effective, and patient-centred care.

What You'll Be Doing

• Provide consultant-level leadership within an adult inpatient psychiatric service
• Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments, diagnosis, and treatment planning for adult inpatients
• Take clinical responsibility for patients presenting with acute and complex mental health conditions
• Manage presentations including psychosis, severe depression, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, anxiety disorders, and dual diagnosis cases
• Lead ward rounds, multidisciplinary team meetings, and clinical reviews
• Undertake risk assessments and develop robust risk management plans
• Work collaboratively with nursing staff, psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers, and other MDT colleagues
• Support admission and discharge planning to ensure continuity of care and effective community follow-up
• Prepare Mental Health Act reports and attend tribunal hearings where required
• Provide supervision, mentorship, and support to junior doctors and specialty trainees
• Contribute to clinical governance, service development, teaching, and quality improvement initiatives
• Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant clinical documentation
• Uphold the highest standards of patient safety, professionalism, and clinical care

What We're Looking For

• Full GMC registration with licence to practise
• CCT in General Adult Psychiatry or equivalent qualification (CESR)
• Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register (or eligibility)
• Section 12 Approval
• Approved Clinician Status (highly desirable)
• Significant UK experience working at Consultant level within General Adult Psychiatry
• Experience working within inpatient mental health settings
• Proven ability to manage acute, complex, and high-risk psychiatric presentations
• Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and delivering high-quality inpatient care
• Experience with Mental Health Act assessments, tribunals, and inpatient treatment pathways
• Excellent leadership, communication, and clinical decision-making skills
• Commitment to delivering outstanding patient-centred care
• Valid Right to Work in the UK (no visa sponsorship available)
