Job overviewThe rotational specialty doctor post aims to provide additional medical support to teams at short notice, e.g., in cases of illness or trainee rotation changes, thereby reducing reliance on agency doctors. The post requires flexibility to be moved to different services on short notice.
This role offers a broad range of adult psychiatry experience. Placements typically last 3-6 months; the post is fixed-term for 2 years, providing job security. Placements are geographically limited to reduce travel time. Each post is supervised by a consultant psychiatrist and includes at least one session of SPA time for CPD activities, supervision, teaching, and governance participation. Weekly CPD events are hosted by the Trust and Cambridge University, which candidates are encouraged to attend.
Main duties of the job- Maintain high clinical standards in evidence-based management of patients under supervision.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure seamless patient care.
- Teach and train junior staff, medical students, and other disciplines.
- Participate in clinical governance, audit, and research activities.
- Ensure active participation in CPD, supervision, and medical appraisal.

The directorate provides acute, primary, and secondary community psychiatric care for ages 18-65, including specialist services like Learning Disabilities, Liaison Psychiatry, Eating Disorders, Forensic psychiatry, and others, primarily in Peterborough and Huntingdon.
Adult Community Care
Organised into locality teams aligned with GP surgeries, with strong links to primary care. Specialist services include CAMEO (early psychosis), Personality Disorders, Perinatal, and others.
Early Intervention Services (CAMEO Team)
Provides care for 17-35-year-olds experiencing first-episode psychosis, focusing on early recognition and treatment, including psychological therapies and social support.
Personality Disorder Pathway Team
Offers assessment and therapy for patients with complex personality difficulties, working in partnership with patients and carers.
Adult Acute Services
Includes wards and crisis teams in Cambridge and Peterborough, offering assessment, treatment, and recovery services, including specialist units.
Other services
Includes Springbank Ward for severe Personality Disorder, Crisis Resolution Teams, Liaison Psychiatry across hospitals, Perinatal Psychiatry, Forensic Teams, Eating Disorder services, and training opportunities such as weekly education, supervision, research, and audit participation.
Person specification Education/Qualifications- Full GMC registration and license to practice
- MBBS or equivalent
- Eligible for approval under Section 12 of the MHA 1983
- MRCPsych or equivalent
- Minimum of 4 years postgraduate training, with 2 in psychiatry or relevant specialty
- Equivalent experience recognized by GMC
- Extensive NHS experience
- Proven ability to develop good working relationships
- Experience working within multidisciplinary teams
- Knowledge of mental health policy and legislation in England
- Decision-making and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and take clinical lead under supervision
- Willingness and ability to travel
