Finance Assistant

3-Month Fixed-Term ContractSalary: £25,000-£26,000 (pro rata) Location: St Albans Hours: Full Time Start Date: Immediate

Our client is seeking an experienced Finance Assistant to join their finance team on a 3-month fixed-term contract. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with previous experience within the independent school sector who can quickly integrate into a busy finance function and provide valuable support during a critical reporting period.

The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting month-end and year-end activities, maintaining financial records, and ensuring accurate reconciliations across a range of balance sheet accounts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support month-end and year-end accounting processes.
  • Prepare and reconcile balance sheet accounts, including:
    • Fixed Assets
    • Prepayments
    • Fees in Advance
  • Investigate and resolve reconciliation queries and outstanding items.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and supporting documentation.
  • Assist with bank reconciliations, journal postings, and general ledger maintenance.
  • Support day-to-day finance operations, including purchase ledger, sales ledger, and cashbook activities.
  • Utilise PASS to process and maintain pupil-related financial information.
  • Assist with audit preparation and provide supporting documentation as required.
  • Provide flexible support to the wider finance team during periods of increased workload.

Candidate Requirements

Essential

  • Previous experience working within the independent school sector.
  • Strong working knowledge of PASS.
  • Proven experience completing balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Good understanding of month-end accounting processes.
  • Strong Excel and Microsoft Office skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work to tight deadlines.
  • A proactive and hands-on approach with the ability to work independently.

Desirable

  • Experience supporting year-end audit processes.
  • Knowledge of fee accounting and school finance procedures.
  • Experience within an education or charitable organisation.
