We are looking for a dedicated experienced band 6 to join our dynamic team as birth centre deputy team leader. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a pivotal role in delivering excellent, woman-centred maternity care in a supportive and progressive environment.

As Deputy Team Lead Midwife, you will support the Team Lead in managing day-to-day operations, clinical governance, and fostering a positive team culture. You will be instrumental in maintaining excellent standards of care, supporting staff development, and driving continuous quality improvement.

This is a great opportunity to develop further leadership and management skills such as workforce planning, staff management, governance, complaints, and quality improvement.

Main duties of the job

o Provide leadership and supervision to midwifery staff within the Birth Centre.

o Assist in ensuring compliance with clinical standards, policies, and guidelines.

o Support effective multidisciplinary collaboration to enhance care delivery.

o Participate in service development and quality improvement initiatives.

o Act as a role model, promoting best practice and professional development.

o Manage daily staffing and resources to meet the needs of women and families.

o Support junior staff with clinical skills throughout all aspects of midwifery led care such as canulation, suturing, venepuncture, vaginal examinations and amniotomy.

o Support junior midwives and maternity support workers to ensure they are confident and competent in providing high quality care including out of the guidelines care.

o With support, participate in the investigation of complaints in accordance with UCLH Policy and ensure that recommendations for change are implemented and shared access the service so other wards and departments can also benefit from this learning.

Person Specification Knowledge and Qualifications

• oNMC Registered Midwife
• oEducated to Degree level or equivalent
• oEvidence of continued professional Development
• oNIPE trained
• oCompleted Preceptorship Programme
• oUp to date knowledge and understanding of the key issues facing the NHS and professional midwifery issues including MIS
• oLeadership Qualification
• oNeonatal course of relevant experience

Experience

• oSignificant midwifery experience in all areas of midwifery
• oMinimum of 1 year experience as a band 6
• oExperience of teaching and mentoring more junior staff
• oFamiliarity with basic IT applications
• oAbility to build professional relationships and rapport with staff of all levels
• oExperience of audit and able to demonstrates awareness of audit and quality issues
• oAbility to demonstrate awareness and understanding of evidence and research in practice
• oExperience in reviewing or being involved in the review of serious clinical incidents
• oExperience of Quality assurance and improvement
• oUnderstanding of clinical Governance and Risk Management
• oExperience of working within a continuity of carer model/caseloading model of care
• oExperience of working within a home birth setting
