The Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant Psychiatrist for one of our older Adult psychiatric wards - Crocus Ward, which a 19-bed older adult ward located within Springfield Hospital in Tooting.

The ward is a mixed functional and organic ward, so patients have a full range of mental health diagnoses, including Dementia.

This is a full-time post.

The vacancy has arisen as a result of current Consultant Psychiatrist leaving the post to move to another team in the Trust.

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity for an energetic and dynamic consultant psychiatrist to join this well-established team. Crocus Ward is one of two older adult wards in the Trust, the other being Jasmine Ward based at Tolworth Hospital.

The post-holder will be located in the Springfield Hospital, Tooting.

The post-holder will be providing clinical leadership to the inpatient team, supporting whole MDT, carrying out Senior Reviews, family meetings, section 117 and discharge planning meetings, MDT reviews and Ward Rounds, working along with the CMHT consultants, the gate keeping of admissions and facilitating timely discharge back to the community.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This Job Description may be subject to change reflecting service developments, particularly as Crocus ward moves to Tolworth Base in the new build planned

The Key roles and responsibilities of the post include

  • Medical leadership on the ward.
  • Availability within normal working hours, for urgent assessments including Mental Health Act assessments.
  • Supporting the Ward Manager/Modern Matron in assessing patients requested for transfer from Adult Acute Admission Wards, as per the agreed transfer protocol.
  • Carrying out family meetings.
  • MDT reviews and Ward Rounds.
  • Working along with the CMHT consultants, the gate keeping of admissions and facilitating timely discharge back to the community.
  • The Consultant will receive cross-cover from Dr Matthew Francis (Crocus Ward Consultant) and where needed from consultant colleagues in the community teams, for leave and other absence.
Person specification QUALIFICATIONS
  • Primary Medical degree.
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice.
  • MRCPsych paper A and B (or equivalent)
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register for Old Age Psychiatry or eligible for such inclusion on the Specialist Registrar within 6 months of completing their CCT.
  • Section 12 (2) approval of the Mental Health Act
  • Approved Clinician (AC) status
  • Qualification in change management and service development skills
KNOWLEDGE: & EXPERIENCE:
  • Completed minimum of three years full time training in approved higher psychiatric training scheme.
  • A detailed knowledge of main treatment approaches for severe mental illness including psychopharmacological interventions
  • Knowledge and experience of the administration of the mental health act, risk assessment and risk management.
  • Experience of teaching medical and non-medical staff, including those who may not have a formal qualification
AUDIT AND MANAGEMENT
  • Commitment to developing practice through clinical audit and/or research
  • Commitment to working with allied agencies including carer's groups, and local charities.
  • Experience of service planning and development
  • Experience of working with third sector partners
RESEARCH AND PUBLICATIONS:
  • Commitment to working within R&D.
  • Evidence of participation in Research, and outcomes of studies.
  • Higher degree in Research.
  • Completion of a Research project and evidence of it's dissemination
  • Publication in a peer reviewed journal.
  • Evidence of participation in research, and outcomes of studies
TEACHING:
  • Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate psychiatry
  • Teaching Qualification
  • Evidence of feedback good from students
