Job Description

These posts are to help support an ongoing expansion in critical care capacity on the Bristol site. The current ICU bedbase compromises 60 beds in 6 discrete clinical areas across the Bristol and Weston sites. As a large acute and elective Trust we admit more than 3000 patients a year to the adult critical care service. Our severity of illness and outcomes are consistently well above the national average based on serial ICNARC data.

Main duties of the job Recent developments include the merger of the General, Cardiac and Weston adult critical care services. Our unit was commissioned as a Veno-Venous ECMO / Severe Acute Respiratory Failure centre in 2022. We have a newly-launched Critical Care Outreach service on the Bristol site, to add to a well-established Weston service.
Candidates can be within 6 months of gaining CCT at the date of interview (please note this does not apply to CESR applications) and have GMC registration with a licence to practice. This is a full-time ICM post in terms of PAs but both full-time and less than full-time working is accommodated within the Consultant rota structure.
Interviews will be held by a multi-disciplinary panel on Wednesday 22nd October 2025, and you will be asked to prepare a presentation as part of the interview process.

Person specification Qualifications & Training
- Full GMC registration
- Certification of completion of specialist training (CCT) (or equivalent, OR Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) at the point of interview
- Candidates can be within 6 months of gaining CCT at the date of interview. Please note this does not apply to CESR applications
- Must be on the GMC's Specialist Register for Intensive care medicine to start Consultant appointment.
- Stage 3/Advanced Training in Intensive Care (or equivalent)
- Offers expert clinical opinion on a range of problems in critical care
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for patient care
- Experience of caring for patients post cardiac surgery
- Experience in delivery of ECMO
- Up to date knowledge and experience of Intensive Care
- Knowledge of NHS priorities for Intensive Care
- Clinical skills and knowledge related to ECMO
- Use of point of care ultrasound techniques
- Awareness of the requirements of clinical governance, with particular reference to Intensive Care
- Applies research outcomes to clinical problems in critically-ill patients and appraises the published evidence
- Formal academic activities, e.g. publications in peer reviewed journals
- Participation in recruitment to large trials in Intensive Care
