Consultant General Surgeon (s.i. Breast Surgery)
Consultant General Surgeon s.i. Breast Surgery Southern Unit for 20 hours per week and Cork University Hospital for 17 hours
This is an appointment to the National on a Public Only Consultants' Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to BreastCheck - Southern Unit for 20 hours per week and Cork University Hospital for 17 hours. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE's National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.
Main Duties of the JobBreastCheck and CUH both have a multidisciplinary team of Radiologists, Surgeons, Histopathologists, Breast Care Nurses (CNM2) and Radiographers delivering both the screening and symptomatic breast services.
Currently, there are 6 Breast Surgeons delivering the symptomatic breast service, three of whom provide surgery for women diagnosed with breast cancer in BreastCheck.
- This post will encompass all aspects of breast surgery to include screening and symptomatic Workloads:
- Attend Triple Assessment Clinics in the symptomatic service
- Attend Assessment and Results Clinics in the screening service - these are follow-up clinics from mammography screen reading recall.
- Attend weekly Multidisciplinary Team Meetings
- Perform surgical treatment for women with breast cancer and diagnostic surgery for high-risk lesions as decided at MDM.
- Encouraged to participate in Research and Audit.
There are 6 Consultant Breast Surgeons and 8 Consultant Breast Radiologists across the two services working in collaboration providing cancer treatment to the catchment population.
- The post holder will contribute to the delivery of clinical care to patients with breast diseases and diagnostics in clinics. The provision of surgical care, post- operative management and ongoing follow up as per protocols.
- The appointee will be part of the multidisciplinary team managing breast cancer patients at BreastCheck and Cork University Hospital.
- The surgeon will be expected to deliver a full, modern range of breast surgeries, including wire-guided localisations, use of a range of localizers, oncoplastic procedures and immediate breast reconstruction.
- The appointee will also be expected to be involved in the development of the unit.
- The appointee will be expected to participate in the Breast Surgery on-call rota pro rata.
- Maintain throughout the Hospitals awareness of the primacy of the patient in relation to all of the Hospitals' activities.
- Actively participate in and promote continuing education and research activities consistent with the position.
- Promote open communications throughout the Hospitals.
- Cover for fellow Consultants during holidays, sickness or other approved absences.
The National Screening Service (NSS), part of the Health Service Executive (HSE), delivers four free, national population-based screening programmes:
Detecting breast cancers at the earliest possible stage, when they can be easier to treat.
To prevent cervical cancer by finding and treating changes to the cells in the cervix before they develop into cancer. Also to find cervical cancer at an early stage, before symptoms start, when it can be easier to treat.
To prevent bowel cancer by finding and removing abnormalities in the bowel (polyps). Also to find bowel cancer at an early stage, before symptoms start, when it can be easier to treat.
Early detection and treatment of sight-threatening retinopathy. When retinopathy is caught early, treatment is effective at reducing or preventing damage to your sight.

Screening programmes aim to reduce morbidity and mortality in the population by identifying those at risk of the condition/pre-condition, allowing free assessment, detection and treatment.
The appointment is whole-time, permanent and pensionable.
The annual salary will be as set out in the Public Only Consultants' Contract 2023. Medical Consultants Salary Scales from 1st June 2026:
€238,221 €251,098 €264,691 €271,846 €278,998 €286,151
The standard working week applying to the post is: 37 hours per week.
The annual leave associated with the post is: 30 Working Days per annum.
