Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant Main duties of the jobRole Summary:
The consultant psychiatrist will provide medical oversight and clinical consultation to the Crisis team and GMAIC for assessment, management and treatment of young people with mental health disorders. They will also supervise teams, liaise with community CAMHS and inpatient services, and contribute to face to face assessments for complex cases.
Key clinical responsibilities of the post- Take clinical responsibility for young people who are open to the crisis service and GMAIC and require medical input.
- Lead the clinical team in acute care, providing emergency, urgent and elective multidisciplinary assessment and treatment for young people with emotional and mental health crisis.
- Provide comprehensive psychosocial multiaxial diagnostic assessment; formulation and management; assessment of psychiatric and psychological comorbidity; care of comorbid physical health needs; psychoeducation; psychopharmacological interventions.
- Consult with community CAMHS, paediatric wards, liaison services on referrals and gatekeeping assessments; use legal frameworks such as the Mental Health Act, Children Act and Mental Capacity Act.
- Maintain clinical records, ensure confidentiality and meet policy and procedural requirements.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams; lead and manage referrals, assessments, treatment, follow up reviews and discharge; provide effective handover to borough mental health teams and local authorities.
- Develop and strengthen relationships with community CAMHS, inpatient services and adult mental health services for transition of young people reaching 18.
- Provide medical advice and clinical supervision to practitioners in the acute care pathway.
- Lead in medical and mental health practice employing a clinical governance framework.
- Support clinical practice development through teaching or research within child and adolescent psychiatry.
- Full GMC Registration.
- Possession of CCT in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, or within 6 months of achieving this, or entered on the GMC Specialist Register.
- Section 12 Approval under the Mental Health Act 183, or eligibility for approval.
- Demonstrable competency across the PMETB approved curriculum for higher training in Child and Adolescent psychiatry.
- Registered for CPD with the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
- Experience with the Mental Health Act (1983).
- Area of special interest and expertise.
- Qualities essential to be a good educational supervisor of trainees in psychiatry.
- Commitment to training and teaching.
- Strong leadership skills, clarity, and commitment to share ideas with colleagues.
- Ability to work clearly and effectively across organisational boundaries.
- Ability to work creatively with teams around complex and challenging client groups.
- Evidence of audit activity.
- Cultural competency.
- Awareness of key legislation (NSF, NICE, MHA, MCA, Children Act).
- Experience as an education supervisor of basic trainees and specialist registrars.
- Evidence of teaching experience.
- Experience leading service development elsewhere.
- Experience with adult psychiatry or partner agencies.
- Published audit.
- Cultural competency.
- Awareness of key legislation (NSF, NICE, MHA, MCA, Children Act).
- Sociable personality and supportive colleague.
