Consultant Interventional Radiologist

Main duties of the jobThe department currently actively participates in the PAVE II (fistuloplasty), MAGIC Embo (lower GI embolisation), and REACT-AVB (TIPSS) studies and is very supportive of consultants developing research interests and presenting work nationally and internationally.
Vascular Interventions- Iliac interventions
- Femoropopliteal procedures
- Below-knee interventions, including retrograde angioplasty with pedal access.
Note that all major vascular procedures, including hybrid interventions and aortic work, are undertaken at Southampton as the regional centre of the Wessex Vascular Network.
Renal and Vascular Access ServicesThe Wessex Kidney Centre is based at Queen Alexandra Hospital. The IR team works closely with nephrology and transplant services to provide renal and vascular access interventions for a population of over 2 million people across the south coast of England.
Non-vascular Interventions- Ultrasound and CT-guided biopsies
- Image-guided drainage procedures
- Radiologically inserted gastrostomy (RIG)
- Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography (PTC) and biliary stenting
- TIPSS
- Colonic stenting
- Nephrostomy insertion
- Ureteric stenting
- Urological rendezvous procedures
- Prostate artery embolisation
- A weekly half-day general anaesthetic interventional list is available for complex procedures.
Out-of-hours work is varied but predominantly includes
- Nephrostomy insertion
- Image-guided drainage
Prospective candidates must be able to perform these procedures independently.
Interventional Radiology FacilitiesThe department has a 9-bed Radiology Day Case Unit supporting elective interventional procedures. The unit is staffed by 20 Registered nurses, 11 Radiographers, 5 Healthcare support workers, 3 Administrative staff. The RDCU team works closely with the IR consultants and performs pre-assessment of patients prior to elective procedures.
Interventional Radiology SuitesTwo dedicated IR fluoroscopy rooms are located within the RDCU:
- Siemens Artis Zee system (scheduled for recommission 2027/28)
Additional facilities include a dedicated ultrasound intervention room used for elective and emergency procedures.
Teaching and TrainingThe department is instrumental in providing highly rated postgraduate training with Radiology trainees rotating through the East Wessex Radiology Training Scheme. The consultant will contribute to formal and informal teaching activities, including undergraduate education and IR exposure to graduate-entry medical students from the University of Portsmouth in partnership with Kings College London.
Person Specification Qualifications- Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice.
- Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT (proposed date within 6 months), CESR or European Community Rights.
- Fellowship of Royal College of Radiologists, or equivalent.
- Subspecialty experience in genitourinary imaging.
- Management course or experience.
- Fellowship level training in genitourinary imaging.
- Interventional Uroradiology experience including image-guided biopsies and some fluoroscopic procedures.
- Demonstrable, significant and ongoing experience in GU radiology with evidence of significant subspecialist training, including competence in a broad range of ultrasound, MRI, CT including biopsies.
- General Diagnostic Radiology skills to support local requirements for acute general radiology service weekday time and on call/ in and working at weekend.
- Understanding of clinical risk management.
- Evidence of teaching medical, radiographic and nursing staff.
- Fellowship in Uroradiology.
- Interventional Uroradiology experience including image-guided biopsies and some fluoroscopic procedures.
- Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice; entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT (proposed date within 6 months), CESR or European Community Rights; Fellowship of Royal College of Radiologists, or equivalent; Subspecialty experience in genitourinary imaging.
- Management course or experience; Fellowship level training in genitourinary imaging; Interventional Uroradiology experience including image-guided biopsies and some fluoroscopic procedures.
