Consultant Cardiologist Cork University Hospital for 37 hours per week

This is an appointment to the HSE South West Region on a Public Only Consultants' Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to Cork University Hospital for 37 hours per week. It may be subject to restructuring to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. The post must be congruent with national health policy and HSE's National Clinical Programmes including delivery of relevant performance outcomes.

Main Duties of the Job

The Consultant Cardiologist will provide hospital based inpatient and outpatient secondary and tertiary cardiac care across Cork University Hospital, Mercy University Hospital and Mallow General Hospital to populations of 584,156 (Cork County) to 1,373,346 (Munster Region). Services include general cardiology, rapid access chest pain, heart failure medication uptitration clinics and primary PCI.

Responsibilities:

• Contribute effectively to the primary PCI programme in the South West Region
• Develop, lead and provide inpatient (including consultations) and outpatient specialist cardiac interventional services in the base hospital
• Contribute to non-invasive and interventional cardiology on call services
• Advance and expand the complex coronary interventional programme
• Advance the structural heart disease programme
• Act as a learning resource and promote continuing education in interventional cardiology for colleagues and non-consultant doctors in training
• Develop pathways and support early discharge/hospital avoidance where possible
• Contribute to general/specialty-specific hospital on call services
• Embrace service redesign as appropriate for the specialty

Information about the Organisation

Care is delivered in a variety of settings. New approaches and models of care advance healthcare reform, including Sláintecare. A team of consultant cardiologists in Cork University Hospital, Mercy University Hospital and Integrated Care Community Hubs provides cardiology care throughout Cork County and the wider Munster area.

The Cardiology service at CUH offers inpatient and outpatient care, non-invasive diagnostics, interventional cardiology (coronary stenting, percutaneous aortic valve replacement, balloon mitral valvuloplasty, ASD/PFO closure), invasive cardiac electrophysiology and cardiac rehabilitation. It is the tertiary referral centre and a national primary PCI hub.

The appointment is whole time, permanent and pensionable. The annual salary is as set out in the Public Only Consultants' Contract 2023. The standard working week is 37 hours. Annual leave is 30 working days per annum.
