Consultant Anaesthesiologist S.I. Pain Medicine - Cork University Hospital & Cork University Maternity Hospital Cork University Hospital for 18.5 hours per week and Cork University Maternity Hospital for 18.5 hours

This is an appointment to the HSE South West Region on a Public Only Consultants' Contract 2023 by the Health Service Executive. The initial commitment for this post will be to Cork University Hospital for 18.5 hours per week and Cork University Maternity Hospital for 18.5 hours. This post may be subject to restructuring in the future to facilitate the reorganisation of acute services in line with new clinical models of acute and community services. It is noted that the post must be congruent with the requirements of, and facilitate implementation of national health policy, the HSE's National Clinical Programmes including commitment to deliver the relevant performance outcomes.

Main Duties of the Job

The post holder will provide key clinical services as a consultant anaesthesiologist at CUH/CUMH, and lead in the development of pain management services for women with endometriosis at CUMH.

The desirable skillset of the successful applicant includes having completed a recognised fellowship in pain management. Secondary, desirable and not essential higher fellowship considerations include obstetric anaesthesia, paediatric anaesthesia and regional anaesthesia.

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the wider clinical service needs within the department of anaesthesia and may be asked to provide clinical anaesthesia services to ambulatory and inpatient services across the wider department. The post holder will be expected to engage with:

  • The provision of anaesthesia services as per the consultant workplan.
  • Attendance at Multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • The development and delivery of outpatient pain consultation services.
  • The development and delivery of inpatient pain management services.
  • The development and delivery of disease specific multidisciplinary pain management pathways.
  • Participation in CME, education, audit and quality improvement programmes.
  • Participation in accreditation programmes and associated activities.
  • Undertake teaching and training of Medical Students & Doctors in Training and other allied healthcare professionals.
  • The provision of education as required in the Hospital for student nurses, other nurses in training and other staff.

Information about the organisation

Cork University Hospital is the Model 4 hub for HSE Southwest and functions as the supra-regional trauma, cancer, cardiothoracic, neurosurgical, obstetric, paediatric and critical care referral centre for the region.

The Department of Anaesthesia, Critical Care, Pain and Perioperative Medicine at Cork University Hospital currently employs 41 consultant anaesthesiologists with 85 doctors in training in anaesthesiology, critical care, and pain medicine. The Department provides anaesthesia, critical care, perioperative medicine services at CUH and Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH); anaesthesia and perioperative medicine services at South Infirmary Victoria Hospital (SIVUH) and Mallow General Hospital (MGH). Inpatient pain medicine services are provided to patients following surgery and/or injury at CUH, CUMH and SIVUH. Outpatient Pain services are located at SIVUH with an important outreach service to cancer services at CUH and Marymount University Hospital.

Appointment is whole-time, permanent and pensionable.

The standard working week applying to the post is: 37 hours per week.

The annual leave associated with the post is: 30 Working Days per annum.
