Combined Clinical Teaching and Emergency Medicine Fellow

Would you like a break after foundation jobs or simply looking to do something a bit different for a year? Do you love emergency medicine and teaching undergraduates? If the answer is yes, this is the job for you. Come and work in beautiful Bath. You will join a team of 11 teaching fellows, supported by the Academy Dean. You will spend half of your time working with Bristol Medical students at Bath Academy, and the other half working on the clinical rota in Bath Emergency Department. In the ED you will join 15 other SHOs who are supported by 24/7 middlegrade/consultant cover. The post will be from 6th August 2025 to 5th August 2026. You will be able to spend your leisure time enjoying the sites and sounds of the world renowned Georgian City of Bath and the surrounding countryside. Main duties of the job

This post is designed for Doctor who is ST1-2 level. Through this position, the post holder will:

  • Develop clinical skills in Emergency Medicine
  • Develop/expand their skills in Medical Education
  • Publish research on their chosen area of interest in Education / Simulation

The job will allow the successful candidate to undertake focused training in Medical Education. You will contribute to the SHO grade rota in the Emergency department for half of your contracted time. The other half of your will be spent in Medical education.

The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to gain a Medical education qualification. Funding for this will be provided through the Bath Academy.

Clinical Duties and Responsibilities

While undertaking clinical duties the fellow will be expected to work with the Emergency Department medical and nursing staff to manage the full range of patients attending the department. There is an expectation that the fellow will recognise the limitations of their practice and seek support from the middle grade and senior doctors to ensure safe patient management.

Emergency Department Educational Program

The fellow will be given the opportunity to attend the weekly SHO departmental teaching program. In addition a medical grand round is held every week and all medical staff are expected to be present.

Timetable

The Emergency Department operates a full shift system. All shifts are between 9 and 11 hours

Job responsibilities

Person Specification Qualification
  • MB or Equivalent
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • MRCS or MRCP,
  • ALS, APLS and/or ATLS.
NHS History
  • 2 year minimum working in the NHS
Experience
  • Ability to interact well with medical students
  • Expertise in full range of Emergency conditions
  • Experience of using Simulation Suite and mannequins for teaching.
  • Keyboard skills and Computer literacy
Knowledge
  • Sufficient knowledge and experience of Medicine and/or Surgery to provide basic tuition for year 2 and year 3 medical students, and to contribute in depth to some year 5 teaching.
  • Evidence of experience of teaching medical students.
  • Knowledge of Bristol University Medical Curriculum.
  • Experience of using Simulation Suite and mannequins for teaching.
Skills
  • Ability to work well within a team.
  • Ability to develop innovative ideas
  • Track record of completing projects
