Job Description

The Acute Dialysis Unit is a 23 stationed Acute Dialysis Unit with additional ward based dialysis. We pride ourselves on delivering excellent care for adult patients with renal failure requiring acute and complex maintenance haemodialysis treatment. We are seeking an inspirational Band 5 Staff Nurse who is passionate about joining an exceptional and dynamic multidisciplinary team. You should be determined to make a real difference are highly motivated and can demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills.

This is an exciting opportunity and as part of our team you will take on the fascinating and challenging role of becoming a renal nurse. You will play an integral role in maintaining and developing a centre of clinical excellence and work in an environment that meets the needs of both clients and team members.

You will ideally have at least 6 months post registration experience. A willingness to undertake training within the speciality is essential as relevant education and training will be provided by an excellent in-service training programme supported by an established Renal Education Team.

Main duties of the job
  • Carry out planned care for a group of patients without direct supervision including inpatient wards and units as required.
  • Ensure the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of evidence based, individualised patient care
  • Assist and advise unregistered staff in the delivery of patient care
  • Maintain accurate clinical observations of the patient and act accordingly
  • Undertake nursing haemodialysis procedures
  • Participate in monthly blood results audit. Liaise with the multi-disciplinary team on evaluation of nursing care.
  • Have responsibility for the correct administration and custody of medicines according to Trust policy including competence in renal Patient Group Directives.
  • Physical exposure to blood and body fluids, use of needles with larger gauges, disposal of dialysis wastes
  • Exposure to chemical hazards that are used in the disinfecting of machines frequently.
  • Frequently pushing and pulling of machines and electric chairs and the distribution of dialysis solutions (5 litres). Manual dexterity required to connect and disconnect haemodialysis lines.
  • 90% standing on shift as both the patients and dialysis machines require frequent monitoring.
  • Attend on call rota and perform other special procedures in renal replacement therapy i.e. plasmapheresis, hemodiafiltration if in possession of renal nurse qualification or indicated on personal development plan.
