Clinical Teacher in Outreach

The School of Clinical Dentistry is seeking to appoint a Clinical Teacher in Outreach to support the delivery and development of undergraduate outreach training.
Outreach placements form a core component of the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) and Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy (DH&DT) programmes, providing students with supervised clinical experience in primary care settings. The successful candidate will support students' transition from working in a secondary care environment to primary care, help coordinate placements across partner general dental practices, support students and educators and ensure high standards of patient care and educational quality.
The role will involve working closely with partner practices across South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire, maintaining strong professional relationships and supporting the delivery of safe, high-quality clinical training.
This post would suit an experienced dental practitioner with an interest in education in primary care and clinical training in outreach environments.
You will participate in clinical governance, staff development and the University Staff Review and Development Scheme (SRDS). An appropriate honorary clinical contract will be sought with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Main duties and responsibilities Support Student Transition from Secondary to Primary care- Contribute to the leadership and development of learning related to primary dental care, including leadership, management and teamworking
- Support preparation for NHS Foundation Training
- Contribute to the leadership and development of the Outreach curriculum for BDS and DH&DT programmes.
- Ensure outreach teaching meets required educational and regulatory standards and supports continuous improvement.
- Maintain awareness of the NHS dental contract and primary care landscape to ensure outreach training remains relevant.
- Maintain strong relationships with partner dental practices and support recruitment of new placement sites where required.
- Coordinate outreach placements and oversee quality assurance across outreach sites.
- Support practices and clinical supervisors in delivering high-quality student learning experiences.
- Provide clinical and classroom teaching for undergraduate dental students.
- Contribute to teaching development and the School's learning and teaching strategy.
- Lead marking and assessment associated with primary care and outreach placements and rotations.
- Facilitate reflective learning activities, including Storytelling Seminars.
- Provide mentorship and pastoral support for students undertaking outreach placements.
- Support students experiencing academic or professional difficulties and implement appropriate action plans.
- Act as a point of escalation for issues arising during outreach placements.
- Ensure high standards of patient safety and professional conduct in outreach settings.
- Manage and resolve issues arising in placements, including complaints, conduct concerns, or indemnity matters.
- Support clinical governance and quality assurance processes across outreach sites.
- Chair relevant meetings and contribute to annual review processes for outreach placements.
- Support organisation of outreach study days and related educational activities.
- Manage operational issues or emergencies affecting student placements or patient safety.
- Maintain high standards of clinical professionalism and educational practice.
- Participate in School and University governance and professional development activities.
- Undertake other duties appropriate to the grade and remit of the post.
- Carry out other duties, commensurate with the grade and remit of the post.

Essential criteria- Full registration GDC (General Dental Council) with appropriate relevant post-qualifying experience in a relevant dental field
- Ability to build and maintain successful partnerships with placement providers
- Significant experience of the workings of a GDP practice, including the NHS contract
- Experience of working in primary care settings and supporting student learning
- Evidence of and commitment to high quality, active, relevant and sustained CPD
- Experience of dealing with complex issues (such as patient complaints) in line with guidance and protocol
- Experience of pastoral support for students, particularly those in crisis or in need of support, implementing successful interventions and action plans
- Understanding and application of evidence-based dentistry
- Ability to establish a professional relationship with patients and colleagues
- Ability to assess and organise resources, and plan and progress work activities
- Experience of mentoring or teaching in a dental environment, a teaching qualification or equivalent status (e.g. CertEd, Fellow of the Higher Education Academy)
- Grade: Clinical Academic
- Salary: £46,675 - £85,796 (per annum, pro rata)
