Clinical Nurse Manager I Theatre - UPMC Whitfield Hospital, Waterford

Overview of role

The post of CNMI has a pivotal role in supporting service planning, coordinating, and managing activity and resources within the theatre area. The CNMI General theatre will coordinate with the theatre management team and lead in the implementation and provision of quality care in the general theatre, alongside the CNM11 General Theatre, in UPMC Whitfield Hospital.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Manage patient care to ensure the highest professional standards using an evidence based care planning approach.
  • Provide a high level of professional and clinical leadership.
  • Lead on the coordination, assessment, planning, delivery and review of service user care by all staff in the general theatre, alongside the CNM11.
  • Provide safe, comprehensive nursing care to service users within the guidelines laid out by the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
  • Show leadership and develop staff within the clinical theatre setting.
  • Develop nursing knowledge for robotic surgery within the department, alongside CNF and CNM11.
  • Manage skills mix and staffing ratio to ensure safe patient care throughout the patient's journey in general theatre.
  • Take ownership of the general, colorectal, urology, gynaecology and robotic surgery specialties, the consultant preferences, ordering and list planning.
  • Take ownership of list assignment and staffing, in line with theatre scheduling and Access to Care team lead.
  • Participate in teams, meetings and committees as appropriate, communicating and working in cooperation with other team members.
  • Facilitate coordination, cooperation and liaison across healthcare teams.
  • Collaborate with service users, family, carers and other staff in treatment and care.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care by personal involvement and supervising the activities of other qualified nurses in the general theatre.
  • Work based on standards, evidence based practice and hospital policy.
  • Regularly evaluate and monitor patient care using the hospital's quality systems to ensure care is delivered.
  • Develop and promote good relationships with patients and carers.
  • Act as an effective member of the multidisciplinary team promoting teamwork and excellent patient care.
  • Evaluate and further develop the philosophy, objectives and goals of the department.
  • Ensure that all staff are familiar with the use and care of all equipment and that such equipment is maintained in good working condition.
  • Ensure strict confidentiality of information regarding patients and residents.
Managerial Responsibilities
  • Provide the necessary supervision, coordination and deployment of nursing and support staff to ensure the optimum delivery of care in the theatre department.
  • Manage communication at the theatre departmental level and facilitate team building within the general theatre.
  • Provide staff leadership and motivation that fosters good working relations and work performance.
  • Manage all resources efficiently and effectively.
  • Lead on practice development within the clinical area.
  • Lead and implement change.
  • Promote, facilitate and participate in the development of nursing policies and procedures, monitor and lead proactive improvement.
  • Contribute to the formulation, development and implementation of policies and procedures at theatre and hospital level.
  • Actively participate in the Nursing Management structure by supporting the ADON Peri operative Services and the Senior Nurse Management team, and deputising in their absence when required.
  • Maintain all necessary clinical and administrative records and reporting arrangements.
Personnel
  • Follow uniform policy and all IPC policies.
General
  • May be required to work in other areas of the hospital in line with patient requirements as requested by the line manager, deputy or nurse management.
  • Must produce satisfactory documentary evidence of all training and experience claimed.
  • Respect the organisational values of the Hospital.
  • Participate in and encourage the development of evidence based practice.
  • Assist in unit audits and data collection.
  • Monitor incident occurrence on the unit and follow up with the theatre CNM II group.
  • Coordinate with the CSSD team regarding instrumentation for theatre lists to ensure availability.
Quality & Safety - SafeCulture
  • Participate in the daily pursuit of excellence as part of Quality and Safety.
  • Work with the line manager to plan, monitor, analyse and improve all quality programmes.
  • Participate in the development of performance indicators in conjunction with the department manager and business objectives.
  • Initiate, participate in and evaluate audits according to HIQA, CHKS, JCI, DGSA, Hospital policy and under the guidance of the Senior Nurse Management and Quality team.
Health & Safety
  • Ensure reasonable care to protect personal safety, health and welfare and that of others.
  • Co operate with UPMC Whitfield Hospital to ensure safety and report any potentially dangerous situations.
  • Attend annual education sessions on Fire Health & Safety.
Information Governance

In the course of employment, may have access to, or hear information concerning the medical or personal affairs of patients and/or staff. Such records and information are strictly confidential and must be kept in safe custody. No information concerning staff or patients may be divulged or discussed except as part of normal duty.

Qualifications & Experience Qualifications
  • Registered in the General Division of the live Register of Nurses kept by the NMBI.
  • Desirable to have completed a recognised post registration course in Peri operative Care.
Experience
  • At least 3 years of theatre (scrub circulating) experience in an acute hospital setting.
  • Desirable to have management experience in a theatre department.
  • Desirable to have completed a recognised post registration course in Peri operative Care.
Job Specific Competencies and Knowledge
  • Completed a Management Course or commit to undertaking the same.
  • Display evidence of continuing professional development.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of HR policies and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft packages.

Salary

€57,009.91 - €67,138.95 per annum based on a 37 hour week.
