Catering Assistant

Contract: Permanent, part time, 30 hours per week (Monday to Friday 09 30, including bank holidays as required).

Location: Victoria Hospital, Blackpool.

Salary: £25,272 per annum. Closing date: 01/07/:59.

Job Overview

OneLSC is a Corporate Collaboration hosted by East Lancashire Hospitals Trust. The Catering Department at Blackpool Victoria Hospital is a 5 star establishment on the food hygiene rating. The role requires a flexible, physically fit team player with catering experience and a "Can do" attitude.

Main Duties

The main duties of this post are as follows:

  • Carry out breakfast and lunch service duties across all sections of the Restaurant, Deli Bar, Coffee Bar, Hot Food Service, Cash Registers, dishwashing and general cleaning of equipment, utensils and cleaning production areas.
  • Move and handle meal trolleys; prepare food; operate large industrial dishwasher and cleaning machinery.
  • Communicate effectively, professionally and in a timely manner with all hospital staff, the public and colleagues across the Trust; attend department meetings as required.
  • Use cleaning chemicals safely and effectively and ensure COSHH is followed.
  • Meet the cleaning standards of the department and Trust to ensure a safe service is provided.
  • Compliance with the Catering Department Services and Hygiene & Quality Standards.
  • Attractive presentation of all food items served; correct and consistent portion control.
  • Meeting the required tempo of work & service deadlines.
  • Assist in basic preparation and portioning of foods including salads, sandwiches, fruit and cold snacks.
  • Complete written records of times and temperatures of foods as required (HACCP).
  • Report to Section Supervisor regarding any food items not considered to be of a satisfactory temperature or standard for meals service.
  • Ensure items needing refrigeration are correctly stored and used in date code rotation.
  • Clear and clean crockery, utensils, catering equipment and premises to maintain high standards of cleanliness.
  • Operate dishwashing machinery (including crockery & utensil washing machinery).
  • Dress appropriately and comply with rules regarding jewellery, watches, hair control, etc.
  • Strictly comply with codes of practice for general food safety and personal hygiene.
  • Follow the Health & Safety procedures of the Catering Department and of the Trust.
  • Observe and comply with safe moving and handling guidance and training.
  • Maintain personal responsibility for own safety and safety of colleagues; report risks and incidents promptly.
Working Environment

The catering department is often hot, noisy and very busy to meet the speed and timeliness of meal services, every day of the year. The duties involve long periods standing, walking, lifting and carrying items.

Person Specification Education and Qualifications
  • Basic reading and writing skills.
  • Will satisfactorily complete Food Hygiene training and achieve qualification within first 12 weeks of employment.
  • Holding recent qualification in Food Hygiene at Level 2.
Experience & Knowledge
  • Previous employment or studies indicating capability to undertake training in duties of post.
  • Experience in catering industry in a similar position with full working knowledge of hygiene & food safety.
  • Evident good personal hygiene, clean and tidy appearance.
  • Two satisfactory references.
