The Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is appointing a Consultant in Anaesthetics with an interest in Obstetric Anaesthesia & digital innovation. Homerton University Hospital is looking for an enthusiastic, dynamic anaesthetist with a variety of interests to provide general anaesthetic services and an on call commitment at the Homerton Hospital. This post has arisen due to expansion of services. The post is offered on a full time basis of 10 programmed activities, 8 DCC & 2 SPA. The posts include a commitment to an on call service which covers general, obstetric emergencies and also support to ICU and ED which includes care of acutely ill children.

Main duties of the job
  • Provide training and service for the provision of service to the anaesthetic department, including maintaining and developing an environment of clinical and academic excellence.
  • Participate in a rota which facilitates appropriate consultant leadership, and provides on call cover at night, weekends and during periods of leave.
  • Assist in the provision of services within the SWNS directorate, demonstrating flexibility and co operation when required.
  • Participate in the Directorate's clinical meetings.
  • Participate in professional supervision, management support and teaching of anaesthetic and other trainees within the department.
  • Assist in the organisation of and participate in teaching sessions for under and postgraduate medical staff and other health professionals.
  • Undertake appropriate mentoring and appraisal of trainees.
  • Assist in the recruitment of trainee medical staff.
  • The on call commitment will be solely at the Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, on a 1:18 basis.
About us

Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is a medium sized local hospital providing acute and community health services for Hackney, The City of London and surrounding communities and also provides a range of specialist services for a much wider population. We provide general hospital and community services to Hackney and the City, and specialist care in obstetrics, neonatology, fetal medicine, fertility, bariatric surgery and neurorehabilitation across East London and beyond. The Trust comprises Homerton Hospital in Hackney and the Mary Seacole Nursing Home, situated in Shoreditch as well as Hackney and the City Community Health Services. As one of London's designated peri natal centres, Homerton provides a highly specialised range of obstetric and neonatal services. A major capital expansion programme is in hand to accommodate 6000 births per annum and provide 40 neonatal intensive care cots. Over 3500 staff are directly employed by the trust, with a further 1000 contracted to work for us or placed here for training. In the latter group are pre and post registration medical and health care professional trainees from the London Deanery, Barts and the London Medical School, City University and East London University.

Qualifications
  • On GMC's specialist register relevant to the post or a Specialist Registrar who is within 6 months of being admitted to the GMC's specialist register by date of interview.
  • Higher degree or diploma (e.g. MD, PhD).
Relevant experience in specialty/sub specialty
  • Clinical training and experience in all aspects of anaesthesia.
  • Experience in managing paediatric emergencies & training course (e.g. APLS, PALS).
  • Advanced training in obstetric anaesthesia.
Clinical skills
  • Proven excellent clinical skills and experience.
  • Track record of adopting new techniques.
Leadership and professionalism including quality improvement
  • Familiar with current structure of the health service and conversant with recent initiatives and changes.
  • A proven track record to take responsibility, lead, make decisions and respond appropriately to service need.
  • Attendance at management or leadership courses.
  • Management of team or programme/project.
Teaching and training
  • Proven experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
  • Experience of educational supervision, teaching skills course leading to a teaching qualification.
  • Innovation in teaching/training.
Clinical governance
  • Evidence of contribution to effective meaningful audit, quality improvement and clinical risk management particularly in obstetric anaesthesia.
  • Quality improvement projects in obstetric anaesthesia.
  • Track record of digital innovation projects.
Research
  • Understanding of principles and application of clinical research.
  • Relevant research experience.
  • Publication of peer reviewed papers.
  • Presentation at national or international meetings.
  • Ability to communicate with clarity and intelligently in written and spoken English.
  • IT skills and computer literacy.
Patient focused skills
  • Empathy, understanding, listening skills, patience, social skills appropriate to different types of client.
Interpersonal skills
  • Good interpersonal skills coupled with an ability to cooperate, persuade and negotiate within a senior clinical and management team.
