Job Overview

St. Helens MBC is seeking an experienced Vehicle Engineer to support the service, maintenance and repair of the Council's fleet of vehicles and plant.

This is a multi-skilled workshop role requiring a flexible approach to vehicle and plant repair. The successful candidate will carry out safety inspections, maintenance inspections, scheduled and non-scheduled repairs, electrical/electronic repairs, hydraulic and pneumatic system repairs, MOT/DVSA preparation and accurate recording of maintenance documentation.

The role requires experience working with fleet vehicles, plant or specialist equipment, with a strong understanding of statutory requirements, O Licence conditions, workshop safety and vehicle maintenance standards.

This role requires direct experience in vehicle engineering, fleet maintenance, commercial vehicle repair, plant repair or workshop-based vehicle maintenance.

You must hold a driving licence and be confident carrying out safety inspections, repairs and maintenance on vehicles, plant or specialist equipment.

Candidates without relevant vehicle/fleet/plant maintenance experience are unlikely to be considered.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out safety and maintenance inspections on vehicles, plant and specialist equipment
  • Ensure work complies with statutory requirements, operator licence conditions and manufacturer recommendations
  • Complete scheduled and non-scheduled electrical and electronic repairs
  • Undertake hydraulic system repairs
  • Undertake pneumatic system repairs
  • Prepare or assist in preparing vehicles for annual MOT / DVSA tests
  • Steam clean or pressure wash vehicles and plant for inspection, service or repair where required
  • Use electronic fleet management systems
  • Complete welding tasks where qualified
  • Operate forklift truck where qualified or work towards qualification
  • Complete job records, inspection reports and maintenance records accurately and on time
  • Ensure documentation supports DVSA regulations and O Licence obligations
  • Support recharge processes for third-party work where required
  • Support training and development of apprentices where directed
  • Undertake relevant training as required
  • Investigate and resolve complex vehicle breakdown faults where required
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, managers, drivers, plant operatives, suppliers and contractors

Essential Experience & Skills

  • Experience in vehicle maintenance, fleet engineering, vehicle repair or plant repair
  • Experience carrying out safety and maintenance inspections
  • Experience repairing commercial vehicles, council fleet vehicles, plant or specialist equipment
  • Knowledge of statutory vehicle maintenance requirements and O Licence compliance
  • Experience with electrical/electronic vehicle repairs
  • Experience with hydraulic and/or pneumatic systems
  • Ability to support MOT / DVSA test preparation
  • Ability to complete accurate inspection, service and repair records
  • Ability to use or learn electronic fleet management systems
  • Strong understanding of workshop health and safety
  • Flexible approach to different types of vehicle and plant repair
  • Ability to work as part of a workshop team
  • Good communication and record-keeping skills
  • Valid driving licence

Desirable

  • Welding qualification or experience
  • Forklift Truck Operator qualification, or ability to achieve this
  • DVSA MOT testing approval
  • Experience with Private Hire and Hackney inspections
  • HGV licence
  • Experience diagnosing electric vehicles or advanced diagnostic systems
  • Experience training or supporting apprentices

The interview will last approximately 30 minutes and will consist of questions based on the job description.
