User Experience Designer
London, Manchester or Glasgow - Hybrid (1 day per week in the nearest office)
£50,000 - £70,000 + benefits
Must be eligible for SC clearance (5+ years UK residency required)
We're looking for a User Experience Designer who loves solving real problems with thoughtful, user-centred design. You'll work as part of a collaborative digital delivery environment alongside Product, Engineering and Research specialists, designing inclusive services that make a measurable difference to users.
This role would suit someone with experience in complex environments, ideally including central government or large-scale organisations and who is comfortable designing end-to-end journeys, prototyping solutions, and helping teams make evidence-based decisions.
What you'll do:
- Lead UX activity across the full life cycle from user needs, journey mapping and prototyping through to final delivery.
- Turn user research insights into actionable design approaches, documented experience flows and high-quality artefacts.
- Design accessible products and services that work for diverse user groups.
- Champion inclusive design principles and ensure compliance with relevant guidance and accessibility standards.
- Collaborate closely with engineers and multidisciplinary teams in an Agile environment.
- Create detailed wireframes, prototypes and design concepts using tools such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, Axure, InVision or similar.
- Present design decisions clearly and confidently to stakeholders across technical and non-technical backgrounds.
- Contribute to continuous improvement within the team and wider design community - knowledge sharing, internal projects, thought leadership and more.
What we're looking for:
- A solid grounding in user-centred design, from concept through to live delivery
- Experience working with GDS service standards, GDS design principles and iterative service development
- Practical experience applying WCAG and accessibility legislation
- Strong hands-on skills in Figma or similar modern design tools, with the ability to prototype effectively
- Able to communicate clearly and tell the story behind design decisions, backed by user evidence
- Comfortable working collaboratively with engineers, researchers, product teams and stakeholders
- Experience creating compelling artefacts such as user journeys, personas, service maps and wireframes
- Eligible for SC security clearance (typically 5 years continuous UK residency)
Bonus points for:
- Accessibility certifications (eg CPACC, WAS, CPWA)
- Experience testing assistive technologies such as JAWS, Dragon, ZoomText
- Ability to build advanced prototypes using HTML, CSS or JavaScript
- Experience reviewing and improving markup for accessibility
Why join:
You'll be part of a growing UX and service design community who actively share knowledge, refine ways of working and set high standards for good design. You'll work on impactful services used by real people every day, with opportunities to grow, learn and influence how digital services are shaped and delivered.
Apply if you want to:
- Own meaningful UX work end-to-end
- Make a visible impact on users and wider public outcomes
- Work in a collaborative multidisciplinary environment
- Continue growing as a designer while shaping best practice around you
