Urology Cancer Nurse Specialist

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced band 7 Urology nurse specialist to join our dynamic urology team.

The successful applicant will be involved into all aspects of care for urology oncology patients. The post holder will demonstrate extensive knowledge and experience in providing high quality of care. The role will involve working closely with all members of the MDT and the wider urology team. You would also be responsible for co ordinating diagnostics and treatment for uro oncology patients according to guidelines and protocols It will also involve a holistic approach to care, supporting patients and carers through this challenging period and beyond.

We are looking for a dynamic individual with CNS uro oncology experience and an understanding of the issues faced by patients with cancer and their carers. They will need excellent communication and organisational skills to ensure the efficient channelling of patient pathways and the ability to work autonomously. The role will also involve teaching and education of patients and staff as well as facilitating nurse led clinics after a period of training.

This is an exciting role that will suit an experienced highly motivated and innovative nursing professional who is focused on improving the experience for those affected by cancer.

Main duties of the job

Key responsibilities:-

  • Co- ordination of care for own caseload of uro oncology patients.
  • Nurse - led clinics for prostate cancer, active surveillance, Renal follow up, bladder instillation,
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of evidence based nursing care
  • Adherence to 28/62-day targets.
  • Support the rapid diagnostic pathways
  • Review of investigations and appropriate action dependant on results.
  • Review of patients independently, advising on care and treatment in line with protocols.
  • Support the co - ordination of MDT/SMDT meetings.
  • Liaison with and referral to specialist centres.
  • Excellent communication and support of patients and families / carers in situations that can be emotionally challenging.
  • Effective communication with other teams' members
  • Provide specialist advice and clinical practice
  • Involvement in Quality Surveillance Programme
  • Audit and research

Person Specification Qualifications
  • RGN
  • Teaching and assessing qualification
Knowledge
  • 3 years clinical experience in urological speciality or outpatients
  • Participation in service improvement and managing change
  • Experience of teaching and assessing in the clinical area
  • Experience of participation in research and audit
  • Independent skills to undertake urological diagnostic procedures including flexible cystoscopy and urodynamics
Skills
  • Ability to overcome resistance to change through advanced communication skills
  • Ability to analyse data and produce written reports
  • Able to manage workload autonomously
  • Current knowledge and understanding of NHS national policy and professional issues related to the area of work
  • Ability to communicate sensitive / difficult information in a variety of settings
  • Proficient in the use of computers and applications e.g. WORD, EXCEL, Powerpoint
