Unqualified SEN & SEMH Teaching Assistant - Chorley

Location: Chorley
Role: SEN & SEMH Teaching Assistant
Contract: Full-time, Part Time, long-term / permanent opportunities available
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Start Date: ASAP

Make a Difference Every Day

Are you passionate about helping young people overcome challenges and reach their full potential?
Perhaps you've worked in care, support work, youth work, sports coaching or mentoring, or you're simply someone who has a natural ability to connect with children and young people.
You don't need to be a qualified teacher or have extensive school experience. We're looking for caring, enthusiastic and resilient individuals who are keen to learn and make a genuine difference.
We are currently recruiting for an Unqualified SEN & SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming and supportive school in Chorley, providing support to pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs.

What Will You Be Doing?

You'll provide practical, emotional and educational support to pupils who may need additional help to access their education and manage the challenges they face.
Working alongside experienced teachers and support staff, your responsibilities may include:

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support to pupils.
  • Helping pupils engage positively with their learning.
  • Supporting children with emotional regulation and social development.
  • Encouraging positive behaviour and helping pupils understand boundaries.
  • Building strong and trusting relationships with individual pupils.
  • Supporting pupils who may display challenging or distressed behaviour.
  • Helping deliver classroom activities and targeted interventions.
  • Encouraging independence, confidence and self-esteem.
  • Supporting pupils during lessons, break times and wider school activities.
  • Working collaboratively with teachers, pastoral teams and other professionals.
  • Helping create a positive, structured and inclusive environment.

What Makes a Great Teaching Assistant?

No formal SEN qualification is required for this position.
We're looking for someone who is:

  • Patient, compassionate and understanding.
  • Resilient and able to stay calm in challenging situations.
  • Confident communicating with children and young people.
  • Consistent and positive in their approach.
  • Passionate about helping others succeed.
  • Able to establish positive professional relationships.
  • Flexible and willing to learn new approaches.
  • A strong team player with a proactive attitude.

Previous experience within SEN, SEMH, education, care, youth work, residential settings, sports coaching, mentoring or support work is advantageous, but we are also keen to hear from candidates without direct experience.

Why Consider This Opportunity?

This role offers an excellent opportunity to start a rewarding career working with children and young people, while gaining valuable experience in a school environment.
You'll receive support from experienced colleagues and develop skills in communication, behaviour management, emotional support and inclusive education.
The experience gained could provide a strong foundation for a future career in teaching, education, psychology, counselling, youth work, social care or specialist SEN support.
Most importantly, you'll have the opportunity to make a real and lasting difference to the lives of young people who need the right person in their corner.
