Role Overview

The CATS UFP External Examiner reviews all assessment provision within their subject for CATS UFP; they are responsible for attending CATS UFP Examination Board, providing an overview of the soundness and robustness of their subject within CATS UFP's examination board procedures and will provide comments and recommendations regarding the maintenance of academic standards, based on assessments and marking procedures each academic year. Please note, this is a consultant position.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the CATS UFP Examination Board

CATS UFP Examination Board meetings are convened as part of the CATS UFP policy for the Management of Academic Awards and Student Progression. The contribution to these boards may be via teleconference or videoconference.

The External Examiner will:

  • Attend CATS UFP Examination Boards following Examinations in June

In June

  • Review a cross section of assessed work to ensure equity across the subject and quality assure the subject as a whole
  • Identify areas of good practice or concern across the subject
  • Report to the CATS UFP Examination Board on any matters of serious concern arising from the exam series, which put at risk the standard of the award(s)
  • Examine all cases of mitigating circumstances following the exam series, and reach a final decision on each student, having weighed up the merits of the case

By mid-September

  • Liaise with the Principal Examiner and/or a member of the CATS UFP Management Team to gain an overview of the standards across the subject for the previous year
  • Receive the CATS UFP data from the Principal Examiner and participate in discussions at the CATS UFP Examination Board regarding subject performance
  • Ensure that recommendations from previous reports have been reached by means consistent with CATS UFP requirements and with normal practice in education
  • Produce an External Examiner's report for the CATS UFP Examination Board

Throughout the academic year

  • Liaise with the Principal Examiner for their subject to ensure that all CATS UFP assessments are conducted in accordance with the assessment regulations for the programme
