Applications are invited for the post of Vascular Trust Doctor (SHO-level) within the Surgical Division at Sunderland. This is a 12-month position. The successful applicants will also participate in a joint on-call rota working across three directorates (Vascular, Urology & General Surgery), providing excellent learning opportunities while supporting elective procedures within their base team.
The posts represent an opportunity for a CT-equivalent surgical trainee to gain experience in a large acute hospital, including emergency and elective surgical practice. The successful applicant will be guided by an Educational and Clinical Supervisor and will have access to educational opportunities comparable to Foundation Programme Year 2. The post holder will also attend departmental surgical teaching sessions, Morbidity and Mortality meetings, and present audits.

Main duties of the jobVascular is one of three tertiary centres for vascular services in the North-East, supported by a team of 8 Consultant Surgeons and 5 Specialist Vascular Nurses. The service offers treatments including open & endovascular surgery for aortic aneurysms, carotid disease, peripheral vascular disease, renal access, and endovenous treatments for varicose veins.
We seek dynamic and enthusiastic candidates who can contribute to the development of the unit. Participation in clinical audits and publication of papers is encouraged.
You will participate in the junior doctor on-call rota, gaining valuable insight into the Vascular service.

- The post holder will deliver clinical care to the Vascular Wards at Sunderland Royal Hospital for both planned and emergency admissions.
- The department provides emergency vascular management for the A&E and GP services in South Tyneside and Sunderland. The post holder will provide diagnostic advice and emergency management in a supported environment and cover the vascular first on-call rota during night shifts.
- The rota allows maximum attendance at educational sessions, including theatre and outpatient clinics. The department is supported by Allied Health Professionals, enhancing the learning experience.
- Regular teaching sessions are held within the department, and the post holder is expected to contribute and support junior colleagues.
- Good basic general medical knowledge.
- Appropriate clinical knowledge and competence.
- Knowledge of evidence-based practice.
- Awareness of own limitations.
- Breadth of experience inside and outside the specialty.
- MBBS or equivalent.
- MRCS Part 1.
- Full GMC registration valid through the appointment.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Punctuality.
- Clear motivation to work as a Trust Doctor in Vascular Surgery.
- Willingness to engage in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
- Experience with audits and understanding their principles.
- Research experience and familiarity with audit projects.
- Ability to work under supervision.
- Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
- Experience with clinical risk management.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and listening skills.
- Enthusiasm, initiative, and the ability to research medical literature.
- IT skills, empathy, non-judgemental attitude, and teamwork capability.
- Awareness of personal limitations and enthusiasm for learning.
This post requires a DBS check due to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.
