Job overviewWe are seeking to appoint a committed, dynamic, and enthusiastic clinician to undertake advanced clinical training in Maternal Medicine within a well established and forward thinking maternity service. This post provides an excellent opportunity to complete the Maternal Medicine Special Interest Training Module (SITM) awarded by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and is designed to prepare the successful applicant for future subspecialty training in Maternal Medicine or progression to a Maternal Medicine consultant post.
This role is ideally suited to a senior obstetric trainee or equivalent who has a strong interest in Maternal Medicine and the care of women with complex medical conditions in pregnancy. The post offers a structured, supportive, and high quality training environment, combining extensive clinical exposure with opportunities in education, leadership, quality improvement, and research.
Main duties of the jobThe post holder will work closely with a team of four Maternal Medicine consultants and will be fully integrated into the Maternal Medicine service across the Trust. Clinical duties will include participation in specialist Maternal Medicine clinics, joint medical obstetric clinics, diabetic antenatal clinics, and combined specialist services, including Cardiac and Perinatal Mental Health clinics. These clinics provide multidisciplinary antenatal care for women with a wide range of complex medical, surgical, and psychiatric conditions, ensuring exposure to both common and highly specialised maternal medicine presentations.
The role offers comprehensive experience in the multidisciplinary management of women with pre-existing and pregnancy acquired medical conditions, working closely with colleagues in physician specialties, anaesthetics, cardiology, diabetes, mental health services, and neonatology. The post holder will develop skills in risk assessment, antenatal planning, intrapartum management, and postnatal follow up for high risk pregnancies, aligned with national guidance and best practice.
In addition to outpatient clinic activity, the appointee will participate in inpatient Maternal Medicine care, multidisciplinary team discussions, and clinical decision making for complex cases. This includes involvement in antenatal ward rounds, delivery planning meetings, and perinatal morbidity and mortality reviews where appropriate.
