Weare inviting applications for our Fellow vacancy (Trust Doctor) at The LeedsTeaching Hospitals NHS Trust in the Department of Ophthalmology. Applicationsare welcomed for this post, which could be held as either full time or parttime. This position would suit a senior higher surgical trainee or post-CCTdoctor who has to demonstrable interest in Corneal & Refractive surgery.Competence in cataract surgery and the ability to supervise junior colleaguesis expected.
Thepost is available from mid August 2026 and will be for a maximum of 12 months.
Main duties of the jobOut-patient clinics, Corneal andcataract operating sessions and therapeutic and refractive laser theatre
Supervision of patients
Contribute to SpecialistMulti-disciplinary team meetings
Referrals to other specialists,departments and hospitals are timely and appropriate
To link with Consultant colleagues inother relevant site specialist teams within the Trust
To contribute to research, teachingand new developments within the Ophthalmology department. The post holder willbe encouraged to facilitate and contribute to the current clinical researchprograms on going in the department.
In addition to the clinical skills,the post holder will be actively involved in research and publication.
The post holder will also be expectedto develop a deeper understanding of management issues within Teaching HospitalDepartments and the wider Trust.
The post holder will assist inproviding service alongside the consultant team, this will include clinics,theatre sessions and Acute Referral Clinic
About usTheEye Department is based at St James University Hospital, Leeds withOphthalmology Services also held at Seacroft Hospital and Wharfedale Hospital.There are 29 consultants in the wider Ophthalmology Department. The team alsotrains Ophthalmic specialist trainees from the region. We have recently movedinto a new outpatient department which has provided us which much more spacefor patients and clinicians.

Job responsibilitiesTodeliver a wide range of Ophthalmology care and sub-speciality Corneal &refractive care for adult patients at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.
Ensure provision of a high standardof care to patients
Accept and manage referrals fromother specialists, departments and hospitals in a timely and appropriate manner
Make referrals to other specialists,departments and hospitals in a timely and appropriate manner
Contribute to departmental meetings
Contribute to quality improvement,research, teaching and new developments within the Ophthalmologydepartment.
Thepost holder will spend up to 12 months working in the Ophthalmology Departmentin SJUH. Although the focus will bewithin the corneal service, the post holder will also be expected to cover theAcute Referral Service seeing general Ophthalmology emergencies and patients.
Theobjectives for the year would be to further train the post holder in Corneal& refractive ophthalmology.
Bythe end of the 12 months, the post holder would be expected to be confident inthe assessment, diagnosis and management of Corneal & refractive patients.There will also be opportunities to be involved in the departments clinicalresearch portfolio.
Thepost holder will also be expected to develop a deeper understanding ofmanagement issues within Teaching Hospital Departments and the wider Trust.
Person Specification Eligibility, Fitness to practice, and Language Skills- Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at the time of appointment.
- Eligibility to work in the UK.
- Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent (as required to complete Foundation competences) by intended start date
- Be eligible for full registration with, and hold a current licence to practise from, the GMC at the time of appointment.

- Demonstrates understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues
- Demonstrates understanding of the basic principles of audit, clinical risk management, evidence-based practice, patient safety, and clinical quality improvement initiatives
- Demonstrates knowledge of evidence-informed practice
- Research or teaching qualifications
- Completed at least 2 years of a higher surgical training course in ophthalmology
- Completed at least one 6 month period of corneal training within a higher surgical training scheme after full GMC registration or equivalent, and evidence of achievement of foundation competences, in
- Evidence of achievement of ST4 competencies in medicine or Surgery (as defined by the curricula relating to Core Medical training or Core Surgical Training)
- Evidence of independent cataract surgery with the ability to supervise others and manage complications
- Previous experience in Corneal surgery
- Experience in managing paediatric patients including anterior segment pathology
