Trust Clinical Fellow in Thoracic Surgery

Full time post in Thoracic Surgery at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, based primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. Closing date: 27 November 2025.
The role is ideal for an individual seeking enhanced VATS experience in thoracic surgery. Experience will be considered when tailoring the post to the successful candidate's needs. The post covers all aspects of thoracic surgery (open and thoracoscopic lung resection, pneumothorax surgery, chest wall resection, and interventional bronchoscopy) except oesophageal surgery.
The department encourages participation in clinical research, audit and teaching. This post is not approved for training and does not carry an NTN, although recognition as sub specialty training for those in UK training schemes may be requested from the applicant's Deanery.
Main duties of the jobPrimary duties will be carried out at the John Radcliffe Hospital, with regular involvement in the Lung Cancer MDT, Thoracic Surgery outpatient clinic and occasional theatre lists at the Oxford Cancer & Haematology Centre (Churchill Hospital). Additional MDT participation at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and clinics at the Basingstoke site of Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust may be required.
Responsibilities include inpatient and outpatient activities, on call duties (thoracic only, no cardiac cross cover), theatre lists, MDTs, outpatient clinics and postoperative rounds. In service training and teaching will be provided by consultant staff; training agreements will be established at the start of the appointment.
Job responsibilitiesThe post holder will:
- Participate in the full shift cardiothoracic registrar on call rota (currently 1:8 resident on call).
Handle all cardiothoracic referrals and cover the Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit on a full shift rota. - Engage in operating theatre activities, regular MDTs, outpatient clinics, and postoperative rounds.
- Contribute to the cardiothoracic service's inpatient and outpatient activities, including clinics and inpatient care at Churchill Hospital where necessary.
- Engage in in service training and teaching at the outset of the appointment.

Person Specification Qualifications- GMC Full Licence to Practice
- Completion of Core Surgical Training or equivalent
- 6 months training at registrar level in cardiothoracic surgery
- Evidence of achievement of ST2 competencies relevant to cardiothoracic surgery.
- Experience sufficient to competently assist in cardiothoracic operations.
- Experience sufficient to manage emergency cardiothoracic referrals.
- Experience of managing/ performing emergency sternal reopening.
- Experience in chest drains, sternotomy, thoracotomy, conduit harvest and surgical assisting.
- Sufficient leadership, organisational, and professional skills to undertake effectively this role.
- Good interpersonal skills and experience of collaborating with multidisciplinary colleagues.
- Proficient spoken and written English for discussing referrals over the telephone and in person.
- Knowledge of the organisation of the NHS and how care is delivered.
- Computing skills: ability to use electronic patient records.
- Validated logbook demonstrating general surgical, cardiac or thoracic experience.
