Trauma & Orthopaedic Consultant (Upper Limb)

The closing date is 24 March 2026

An opportunity to join West Middlesex University Hospital Trauma Orthopaedic department for a Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon with specialist interest in Upper Limb Surgery. Appointment will be for a 10 PA permanent consultant post.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate is expected to work with existing consultants and staff to ensure high-quality, comprehensive specialist orthopaedic care, and lead a team to deliver effective treatment for patients in both outpatient and inpatient settings. Dedicated regular theatre sessions will form part of the agreed job plan.

The post holder will be expected to:

  • Actively participate in departmental meetings, including Business, Mortality and Morbidity, and daily trauma meetings.
  • Provide a comprehensive upper limb and primary arthroplasty outpatient and theatre service.
  • Manage complex upper limb trauma cases beyond the remit of a general trauma surgeon.
  • Take an active role in MDT discussions and ensure peer review standards are consistently met within the department.

Job responsibilities

The successful candidate is expected to work with the existing consultants and staff to ensure high quality comprehensive specialist orthopaedic care and lead a team to ensure effective treatment for patients in outpatient and inpatient setting. Dedicated regular theatre sessions will be part of the agreed job plan including rotation at the Elective Orthopaedic Centre.

The post holder will be expected to actively participate in regular departmental meetings, such as to Business meeting, Mortality and Morbidity, daily trauma meeting.

Key working relation relationships The medical staff in the Department are as follows:
  • Mr Karthig Rajakulendran - Clinical Lead (Consulant in Hip and Knee Surgery)
  • Mr Victor Babu Locum Consultant General Orthopaedics
  • Mr Chris Huber Consultant General Orthopaedics Knee and Hip surgery
  • Mr Hamed Zadeh Consultant Orthopaedics, Upper Limb & Paediatric Orthopaedics
  • Mr Gamal Morgan - associate specialist
  • 8 Senior Middle Grade doctors including 3 Specialty Registrars (North West London Training Scheme)
  • Mr Sivan Sivaloganathan (Consultant: Knee Surgery)
  • 11 Junior Clinical Fellows including 2 Core Trainees (London Deanery Basic Surgical Training Programme)

There is a trauma co ordinator and trauma nurse practitioner on each site. Each consultant reports professionally and managerially to the Divisional Management team, via their Clinical Service Lead and General Manager. You will be expected to agree annual objectives with your Clinical Service Lead and General Manager to fit with the needs of the service, division and trust.

Provide a comprehensive upper limb outpatient and theatre service, as well as manage complex trauma of the upper limb outside the remit of a general trauma surgeon.

The appointee will take an active role in the MDT and be responsible for ensuring that peer review standards are attained within the department.

Person Specification Qualifications and Training
  • Full GMC Registration
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register OR eligible within 6 months of the date of the Advisory Appointments Committee via CCT or CESR (CP) - proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview, CESR or European Community Rights E Hip surgery Fellowship
  • Good understanding of and adherence to the principles of Good Medical Practice set out by the General Medical Council.
  • An MD or equivalent higher postgraduate training
Clinical Experience
  • Evidence of broad based training including experience in Trauma, inclusive of complex upper limb trauma
  • Logbook evidence of experience in operating on all elective and traumatic Shoulder & Elbow conditions
Teaching and Training
  • Experience of undergraduate teaching and post graduate training
  • Medical Education or Adult Education Training
  • A good understanding of the role of clinical management
  • Management Training Course
Research
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the principles and applications of clinical research
  • Experience of implementing evidenced based changes in practice
Skills and Knowledge
  • Solid Understanding of the Clinical Governance Agenda
  • IT proficiency including, email, Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Evidence of effective audit leading to change
