Job overviewWe have an exciting opportunity for a registered health care professional to join our Medicine and Emergency Care Group as a Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner.
Advanced Clinical Practitioners are highly skilled autonomous clinicians who assess, diagnose, treat and manage patients presenting to all areas of the medical care group. You will be supported to undertake the training to gain enhanced skills beyond that of your primary professional registration.
The successful applicants will have an excellent opportunity to be enrolled onto the MSc Advanced Practice course at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) and be supported by a named clinical mentor and consultant supervisor in practice.
The post holder will be based within the Medicine and Emergency Care Group, and the role will include working across our acute directorates to gain a wide range of experiences.
Clinically, you will be responsible to the Clinical Director within the directorate or care group, and professionally to the Nursing Director within the Care Group. You will work as part of an emerging advanced practice led workforce which will cover the acute directorates and support the urgent and emergency pathway model throughout a variety of specialities over a 7 day, 24 hour period.
Main duties of the jobThe post holder will take a lead role in the promoting of high-quality care for acute medical patients in East Lancashire. They will provide clinical expertise and advice, demonstrating a sound understanding of the issues relating to the identification, assessment, diagnosis and management of all patients within the acute medical setting. They will provide Safe, Personal and Effective care through clinical audit and continuous quality improvement, implementing evidence-based practice and by involvement in the clinical governance process. They will work within a multidisciplinary team providing skilled and professional leadership.

The Emergency department and Acute Directorate has a great team, who work under some really challenging times with increased demand for service, and increased pressures for capacity. The team is multi-disciplinary, where everyone wants to make a difference to patients and our colleagues. We are the busiest within the Northwest, with the largest ambulance arrivals. Detailed job description and main responsibilitiesThis is an exciting time to join our newly developing team of Advanced Clinical Practitioners in the Medical and Emergency Care Group, as the role is ever evolving and changing i. e clinical supervision/support from the Medical Consultants and ACPs; and opportunity to gain advanced clinical skills in procedures such as abdominal paracentesis, lumbar punctures and focused acute medicine ultrasound - all of these skills will be supported by the candidates completion of the acute medicine speciality specific competency document. You will be expected to provide leadership, supervision and education to nursing staff, colleagues and the wider medical and surgical teams.
Historically this service has been predominantly nurse led, but with an ever changing and developing workforce we wish to invite other allied health professional to apply for these dynamic roles, to further complement our team and positively impact patient care. This role is demanding, requiring significant experience, enthusiasm and drive to ensure the care we provide to deteriorating patients is evidence based, safe and effective. You will be expected to work a combination of day and night shifts to ensure service provision is maintained.
Educational opportunities will include a bespoke individualised learning portfolio that will be adapted to meet your specific learning requirements, ensuring development of competencies required for the role. Clinical supervision will be supported by an allocated consultant and Lead ACP.
Person specification Essential and Desirable- Registered healthcare professional with current registration (NMC or HCPC)
- Commitment to undertake and complete a Master's level ACP program.
- Minimum of 5 years post registration experience in a relevant setting.
- Evidence of continuing professional development.
- Understanding of acute medicine principles and the ACP roles.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage a caseload independently.
- Proficiency in using electronic health records.
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Awareness of current healthcare issues and developments.
- Independent and Supplementary Prescribing.
- Experience in working in Acute Medicine.
- Experience in leading a quality improvement project.
Disclosure and Barring Scheme (DBS)

The healthcare sector is exempted from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.
In line with other NHS organisations in the North West Region, the Trust is now passing the charge for undertaking a DBS check on to candidates in the event they are successfully appointed into the post for which they have applied. Candidates can choose whether to pay this over 1-3 months as a deduction from the monthly salary. The cost of an Enhanced Disclosure will be £55.38 and for a Standard Disclosure will be £27.38.
