A growing and well-established engineering consultancy is looking for an experienced and motivated Temporary Works Engineer to join its team in Exeter.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer with 3+ years' UK construction design experience and a strong understanding of temporary works and BS 5975 to take on a varied and rewarding role within a supportive engineering environment.

You'll work across a diverse range of construction sectors, delivering bespoke temporary works solutions for clients while developing your technical, commercial and project management skills.

The Role

As a Temporary Works Engineer, you'll be involved throughout the design process, from initial enquiries and site surveys through to concept development, detailed design and technical delivery.

You'll have the opportunity to work on challenging projects, develop innovative engineering solutions and build strong relationships with both new and existing clients.

Your responsibilities will include designing and developing temporary works solutions for a wide range of UK construction projects, acting as a key point of contact for selected clients and supporting the delivery of larger projects.

You'll prepare Temporary Works Design Briefs, assist clients in developing project requirements, and produce concept and detailed designs, calculations and technical drawings. You'll also develop complex engineering solutions and present them clearly and effectively to clients.

The role will involve carrying out site visits, surveys and investigations, preparing quotations for customer enquiries, supporting project forecasting and providing technical support to colleagues and clients throughout the design process.

You'll be expected to manage multiple projects independently, prioritise your workload and meet deadlines, while also supporting and coordinating junior members of the team.

You'll keep up to date with relevant legislation, standards, software and industry best practice, while supporting the organisation's commitment to health and safety and ensuring designs are developed in accordance with CDM 2015 and relevant temporary works procedures.

About You

We're looking for someone who combines strong technical ability with excellent communication skills and a practical, client-focused approach.

You should be degree qualified in Civil or Structural Engineering, with a minimum of 3 years' experience within a UK construction design environment and ideally significant temporary works experience.

You'll have good knowledge and understanding of BS 5975 and temporary works principles, along with excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to explain engineering concepts clearly to clients and colleagues.

Strong mathematical and numerical skills are essential, together with excellent 2D AutoCAD experience and the ability to interpret engineering drawings, sections, details and general arrangements.

You should also have strong IT skills, confidence working with engineering software and digital tools, and the ability to manage multiple projects effectively while working to deadlines.

A proactive approach to problem solving and a genuine interest in developing practical engineering solutions are important for this position.

Desirable Experience

Working towards Chartered Engineer status with the ICE or IStructE would be advantageous, as would experience in permanent works civil or structural engineering.

Previous experience supervising, mentoring or supporting junior engineers would also be beneficial, as would experience in a client-facing or project management role.
