Job Description

Full-time considered up to a maximum of 1.0 FTE (36.5 hours). Requests for flexible working options will be considered (subject to business need). The core working hours in Medical Research Building are 8:30-17:30; daily working hours have to be within core hours, flexible options outside core hours would not be suitable for this role.

Grade 6 starting at £34,610 to £38,784 per annum, pro rata if part time.

About the role

As a Technical Supervisor, you will be supporting the research in our facilities in a growing Medical School with a diverse research portfolio. You will take primary responsibility for managing and maintaining tissue culture suites and microbiology labs, a rapidly expanding Tissue Bank, the associated sample database and assisting the Technical Services Manager with health and safety and other regulatory compliance.

About you

We are looking for a self-motivated, hardworking person to act as a Technical Supervisor. The post requires a proactive approach, initiative, the ability to work independently and as part of a team, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills. You will be highly organized, with a positive and flexible approach to work in order to deal with a variety of requests and tasks.

  • Ideally you will be educated to Masters-level or equivalent
  • have extensive experience of mammalian cell culture techniques
  • molecular biology and some experience of processing and analyzing human tissue samples
  • An understanding of health & safety as it relates to laboratories with biological and chemical hazards is essential.
  • Experience in maintaining and setting-up databases, preferably using specialist software packages, is also essential
  • Some understanding of the Human Tissue Act as it relates to the acquisition and storage of human tissue samples.
  • Some laboratory managerial experience would be an added benefit.
  • This post would suit an experienced scientist looking to pursue a technical career in laboratory-based research management.
