Job Description

The EA is the primary organisation carrying out regional water resources for groundwater modelling in England. This is an opportunity to get involved in exciting technical developments such as implementation of MODFLOW 6 and advanced recharge modelling, to support groundwater regulation in Southeast England in a unique, data-rich environment.

We are looking for a groundwater modeler, with a minimum of five years' experience, who can build and update conceptual and numerical regional groundwater models using fortran/python coding, ARCGIS Pro, Excel and other quantitative tools, with a high standard of quality control. You will also carry out technical oversight of consultants in the same type of work.

In this role you will support the Environment Agency's groundwater modelling programme in the Southeast of England and be an active member of the wider groundwater modelling community.

The EA is happy to discuss and support flexible working patterns including part-time working, with any reasonable requests being discussed at the interview.

Your base location will need to be at an office/depot in our South East area. This could be anywhere across Hertfordshire and North London, Kent and South London, Solent and South Downs as well as Thames offices of Farnham/Reading/Wallingford.

The team currently works mostly remotely and meets once a month in London; however this working pattern is not contractual or guaranteed. You are also expected to join in-person groundwater and contaminated land team meetings usually taking place in Farnham, Reading or Wallingford.

The Team

You'll join our Southeast Groundwater Modelling Unit which sits within the Environment Agency Thames Area Groundwater and Contaminated Land team.

The unit provides technical support to the Environment Agency areas of Thames, Hertfordshire and North London, Kent, South London and East Sussex and Solent and South Downs. We are a remotely dispersed team but currently meet monthly in London and use smart tools to stay connected in between.

Experience/Skills Required

Essential:

  • Industry or regulatory experience as a groundwater resource modeller working with or developing groundwater models
  • Technical skills in hydrogeology: e.g. constructing and interpreting conceptual groundwater scenarios and numerical models
  • Experience with MODFLOW, Fortran/python coding, ARCGIS Pro mapping software, Excel and other quantitative tools
  • Honours degree (or equivalent), and ideally a MSc level qualification (or equivalent), in geology / hydrogeology or a relevant equivalent discipline
  • Proactive, self-motivated and a confident communicator
  • Knowledge of the hydrogeology of the geological strata found in the Southeast of England or equivalent

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of Environment Agency groundwater models and regional geology
  • Chartership, or a commitment towards working for chartership

Contact and Additional Information

We use smart tools to stay connected and reduce travel; some travel and overnights may be required.

Any queries please contact .

Interviews will likely be held in mid-October and will be either virtual or face-to-face.

If you consent to being held on a reserve list, we'll hold your details for 6 months and may offer you an alternative post.

In addition to the answers to the competency questions, we will also require a cv to be submitted alongside the application.

Closing date: 14 September 2026.
