Job Overview 
The Maths Department at St Leonards seeks a dedicated secondary mathematics teacher to cover a 12 month fixed term contract as maternity cover, commencing 1 October 2026. The role involves teaching across Years 7-13 within an International Baccalaureate World School and supporting the department's inclusive, collaborative culture.
Responsibilities- Employ a range of teaching and assessment strategies and resources to lead dynamic and engaging lessons with a clear focus on pupil progress.
- Use teaching and assessment strategies to reinforce and extend work in class, selecting approaches appropriate to the subject, topic and pupils' needs.
- Set expectations and pace of work that appropriately challenge all pupils and ensure effective progress.
- Reflect on practice, engage with current educational thinking, and proactively seek professional development opportunities.
- Identify and respond to pupils with difficulties in learning, seeking further advice when necessary.
- Respond to cultural, gender, linguistic, religious, social differences and disabilities, fostering an inclusive environment.
- Encourage pupils to take initiative and become responsible for their own learning.
- Assess pupil attainment in line with school policy and national standards, providing constructive oral and written feedback on a regular basis.
- Monitor, assess, record and report on pupil aptitudes, needs and progress.
- Use assessment results to evaluate and improve teaching and attainment standards.
- Demonstrate sound knowledge of the mathematics curriculum and support literacy and numeracy skills.
- Appreciate the effectiveness of ICT in learning and teaching.
- Contribute to the personal and social education of pupils within the school.
- Plan and prepare coherent teaching programmes and lessons, including homework, in collaboration with colleagues to ensure continuity and progression.
- Maintain knowledge of curriculum issues, child development and health & safety guidelines.
- Organise classes and lessons to ensure productive engagement for all pupils.
- Create and maintain a stimulating, purposeful, orderly and safe learning environment.
- Manage pupil behaviour fairly and consistently, using appropriate rewards and sanctions and seeking advice when needed.
- Contribute to bullying prevention strategies and justify behaviour management actions.
- Demonstrate understanding of the IB programme and UK educational systems.
- Act as a proactive pastoral tutor, shaping academic and personal development of a cohort.
- Up hold and support all school policies and development plans, and demonstrate contractual, pastoral and legal knowledge.
- Promote positive relationships among staff, parents and pupils, contributing to the school ethos.
- Communicate with parents about pupil progress and personal development sensitively.
- Obtain assistance from relevant staff (curriculum, guidance, learning support, staff development) as required.
- Contribute willingly to extra curricular and boarding life.
- Undertake cover duties during the academic day and break and lunch periods as required.
- Adhere to the St Leonards School Child Protection Policy and GTCS Code of Professionalism and Conduct.
- Participate in other reasonable activities to meet the needs of the school or enhance role effectiveness.
- Degree level in a relevant discipline.
- PGCE/PGDE qualification.
- Evidence of continued professional development.
- Proven experience teaching at secondary level.
- Experience teaching across Years 7, 8, and 9.
- Experience or understanding of pastoral support.
- Experience using ICT in the classroom and ability to train others.
- Experience or knowledge of the IB curriculum.
- Experience as a form tutor.
- Experience in a boarding environment.
- Commitment to student learning and raising achievement.
- Excellent classroom practitioner.
- Ability to create and deliver engaging and effective lessons.
- Enthusiasm to inspire students' desire to learn and participate.
- Experience contributing to extra curricular activities.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Independently plan own workload and meet deadlines.
- Work calmly under pressure.
- Show sensitivity to others' needs and provide support when needed.
- Maintain a professional manner and appearance.
