Job Description
Overview

We're on a mission to make money work for everyone. We're moving away from traditional banking and, with our products and services, aim to solve problems and change lives. An exciting role has opened up in our Legal & Board Governance Collective for a senior sustainability lead with a proven track record in shaping and delivering complex sustainability initiatives. In particular, we are looking for proven experience in assessing and implementing decarbonisation strategies aligned to company goals. This role is crucial in embedding our sustainability commitments into our corporate strategy and daily operation.

In this role, you will report to the Director of Sustainability, work with a variety of stakeholders across the business, and deploy program management capabilities with deep ESG expertise to drive tangible business and environmental outcomes. The role requires working with evolving information in a fast-paced organisation and synthesising large volumes of data into actionable plans aligned with Monzo's goals.

Responsibilities
  • Strategic development: contribute to the evolution of Monzo's long-term sustainability strategy, identifying risks, opportunities, and best practices to keep us at the forefront of the sector.
  • Operationalise our climate strategy: own the climate strategy, leading end-to-end decarbonisation delivery, including renewable energy procurement, supplier engagement, tracking performance against targets, and meeting public climate commitments.
  • Regulatory expertise: act as an internal expert on evolving environmental and climate-related regulations (e.g., TCFD, CSRD) to ensure compliance and strategic alignment.
  • Business case creation: develop compelling business cases for sustainability initiatives, articulating ROI, risk mitigation, and brand value to secure investment and stakeholder buy-in.
  • Performance & reporting: devise and track key metrics, prepare reports and presentations for senior stakeholders, including the Board, to support strategic decision-making.
  • Cross-functional leadership: collaborate with internal stakeholders (e.g., Product, Finance, Marketing, People) to embed sustainability principles into workstreams and decision-making.
  • Stakeholder management: manage relationships with external partners to advance the sustainability agenda.
Qualifications
  • Proven leader in climate strategy and delivery, with extensive experience developing decarbonisation roadmaps (including Scope 3 accounting and Science Based Targets) and delivering data-driven projects.
  • Deep subject matter expertise in ESG topics, with a focus on environmental sustainability (e.g., carbon accounting, reporting frameworks, renewable energy).
  • Commercial acumen with experience building business cases and linking sustainability outcomes to financial performance and corporate strategy.
  • Exceptional communication skills to articulate complex sustainability issues to diverse audiences, including board members.
  • Strategic & proactive mindset with the ability to identify problems, take initiative, and implement improvements in a fast-paced environment.
  • Influencing skills with a track record of engaging across levels to drive change and embed practices.
  • 8+ years of relevant work experience in complex organisations with a proven track record of driving outcomes.
Personal Attributes
  • Strategic thinker with a pragmatic, results-oriented approach
  • Deep-seated passion for creating positive environmental and social impact
  • Resilient and tenacious, with the ability to inspire and energise others
  • High agency and ownership, taking accountability for outcomes
  • Curious and committed to continuous learning in a fast-evolving field
  • Flair for influencing to engage a wide range of stakeholders
