Job Description

Stress Engineer

Working Pattern: Full time

Location: Derby, Bristol or Glasgow

An exciting opportunity has arisen within Rolls-Royce as we seek to recruit Stress Engineers to join our team. This role will be known internally as a Mechanical Integrity Engineer.

Mechanical Integrity Engineers ensure the integrity of our products by predicting the mechanical behaviour of components, sub-systems, and the entire assembly. They support the design function by considering various failure mechanisms (e.g., proof, ultimate, fatigue, creep) and contributing factors (e.g., vibration, thermal loads, manufacturing anomalies, corrosion, extreme conditions). They predict the lifespan of critical rotating components and validate these during development and service. Additionally, they model and validate the mechanical and vibrational behaviour of the entire engine system.

The role influences all stages of the design cycle, from ensuring robust and optimized designs to supporting the product's service life and disposal.

Why Rolls-Royce?

Rolls-Royce is a renowned and innovative brand, leading in design, build, and service of systems providing critical power with safety and reliability at the forefront.

We foster an inclusive, innovative culture that invests in your growth and offers opportunities to make a difference.

What We Offer

Excellent development opportunities, a competitive salary, and benefits such as bonuses, support assistance, and discounts. We support hybrid working, balancing office, home, and remote work, with an expectation of about three days in the office per week.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct mechanical design and analysis, including numerical modelling, boundary condition development, and model validation.
  • Perform mechanical experiments, prepare specifications, supervise tests, and analyze results.
  • Resolve technical problems through evaluation and judgement, interpreting data to find effective solutions.
  • Evaluate and verify the lifespan of critical components during operation.
  • Manage technical packages and investigations, ensuring delivery within scope, time, and budget.
  • Act as a technical point of contact, sharing expertise and advising colleagues and clients.
  • Promote continuous improvement initiatives within your team and beyond.
Candidate Profile

To succeed, you should have:

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical design assessment methodologies, finite element analysis (preferably ANSYS), and complex testing.
  • An understanding of material behaviour, crack propagation, and fatigue.
  • Cross-disciplinary engineering knowledge, including manufacturing, aerodynamics, thermodynamics, and product definition.
  • Experience with innovative design challenges and outside-the-box problem solving.
  • Effective communication skills for complex analysis results.
  • Membership of a professional body or working towards Chartered status is preferred.

Security Clearance (SC) may be required, and UK nationality might be necessary for some roles. Rolls-Royce supports the application process for security clearance.

We are committed to diversity and inclusion, welcoming applications from all backgrounds, including refugees.
