Overview

UPMC Whitfield Hospital is recruiting a Staff Nurse Orthopaedics on a full time permanent contract. The role involves providing high quality, patient centred care, developing strong multidisciplinary relationships, and delivering evidence based practice within the orthopaedic ward.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Ensure the delivery of the highest possible standard of care to all patients.
• Act as preceptor to preregistration students, mentor new clinical and non clinical staff, and support colleagues when needed.
• Liaise with education department lecturers to maintain UPMC Whitfield Hospital as a recognised learning environment for student nurses.
• Maintain effective communication and interpersonal relationships with the multidisciplinary team to ensure good team spirit and collaborative working practices.
• Support the unit manager by meeting responsibilities set out by the Unit Manager or Director of Nursing.
• Identify and discuss nursing/patient needs with consultants, the nursing team, multidisciplinary team, patients and carers.
• Accept responsibility and be accountable for the holistic care of a named group of patients on a shift basis.
• Maintain the highest possible standards of patient care and patient safety at all times.
• Promote a patient centred style of clinical practice, act as patient advocate and provide emotional and psychological support to patients.
• Understand and apply principles of pre assessment, risk reporting, occupational health, facilities management, patient moving and handling, resuscitation/Basic Life Support, health and safety, departmental financial controls, and related hospital policies.
• Ensure personal registration is current and submit verification to HR annually.
• Support hospital accreditation and safety initiatives, and participate in research, audit and evidence based practice projects.

Quality & Audit

• Lead and participate in clinical audit and research activities, providing written reports and promoting evidence based practice.
• Assist in local audits for annual accreditation and work with the Quality and Patient Safety team to meet standards.

Health and Safety

• Uphold policies relating to fire, infection control, radiation safety, and health and safety regulations.
• Identify potential risks and adhere to incident reporting procedures.
• Observe a general duty of care for patients, staff, visitors and yourself.

Professional / Education

• Act as shift coordinator/team leader, assess and allocate workload to maintain patient and staff safety.
• Manage workload to meet patient care needs and allow for allocated breaks.
• Control, store, and administer drugs according to clinic and statutory guidelines and NMBI medication management standards.
• Develop IT skills for efficient clinical workflow and use of Isoft and other patient pathway systems.
• Liaise with consultants regarding patient care and bed allocation.
• Continuously risk assess the theatre environment and report incidents per UPMC guidelines.
• Demonstrate research based nursing care and engage in professional development.
• Complete any specific training required for role, such as equipment use and specialist medication administration.
• Maintain confidentiality and comply with GDPR legislation.
• Coordinate with the scheduling team regarding patient bed and theatre slot allocation.

Qualifications & Experience

• Registered General Nurse with The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI).
• Orthopaedic and/or general inpatient ward experience essential.
• Paediatric experience desirable.
• Evidence of ongoing CPD.

Salary

€37,657.19 - €55,837.81 per annum based on 37 hours per week.
