Staff Nurse Endoscopy - UPMC Whitfield Hospital, Waterford

Overview of the Role

To work as a member of a team of nurses in UPMC Whitfield Hospital Endoscopy Unit providing high quality, patient centred care for patients and their families. To develop and maintain good relationships with all members of the multi disciplinary team and to work closely with nursing colleagues developing innovative practice within the unit delivering evidence based care. To develop specialist knowledge of nursing practice relating to Endoscopy.

Clinical Duties
  • Takeresponsibility for all equipment such as endoscopy monitors, Dinamaps, suction apparatus, diathermy machines, light source and photographicprinter and ensure that suction lines, water bottles and tubing areattached to suction machines.
  • Ensurethe updating of the Endoscopy register and ensure the Endoscopy list ischecked with PIMS and the correct patient details are also on EndobaseSystem.
  • Tomonitor safe and economic use of all supplies, considering at all timesthe budgetary implications of implementing care and treatments.
  • Befamiliar with stock management at unit level and how to access/order stockwhilst always maintaining adequate stock levels to meet dailyrequirements.
  • Ensurethe patient is attached to the monitoring equipment and oxygen and placedin the correct position.
  • Toassist the Anaesthetist and consultant with drug preparation and anychecks necessary.
  • Toadhere to the "time out" policy.
  • Toassist with biopsies, thus ensuring patients stays in the correct positionand observing airway and vital signs.
  • Checkbiopsy specimens and laboratory forms with another nurse ensuring thecorrect patient details are filled.
  • Ensurethat when a procedure is completed, that all the relevant documentation iscompleted by the consultant, anaesthetist, and nurses. On completion, thepatient is then transferred back to the Ambulatory Day Wardaccompanied by a nurse and porter or other clinical staff member.
  • Tofollow the policy re processing and cleaning of scopes.
  • Toensure that all Specimens are brought to the lab and checked withlaboratory staff.
  • Toensure that there is an accurate recording of start and finish times foreach procedure, including the name of the Anaesthetist, if applicable.
  • Ensurethe Medication Management Policy is adhered to by all staff.
  • Toensure that any necessary learning opportunities or incidences arereported in a timely manner on the hospital reporting system, viclarity.
General Duties
  • Mentornew clinical staff and new nonclinical staff. Support and guide allcolleagues when needed.
  • Liaisewith link lecturers from affiliated nurse education departments withparticular regard to developing and maintaining UPMC Whitfield Hospital asa recognised Learning Environment for student nurses.
  • Developand maintain effective communication and interpersonal relationships withall members of the multi disciplinary team to ensure a good team spiritand collaborative working practices.
  • Supportthe unit manager by meeting agreed responsibilities as set out by the UnitManager, Assistant director of Nursing or the Director of Nursing at anytime.
  • Maintainhigh standards of communication, both written and verbal at all times.Have a working knowledge of all ABA publications to include the Scope ofPractice Framework and Code of Professional Misconduct.
  • Maintainown professional registration and submit to Assistant Director of Nursingfor verification annually.
  • Developand maintain a high level of knowledge of the following and alwayspractice within the guidelines and policies written at both unit andHospital level:
    • Clinicalrisk reporting policy
    • OccupationalHealth
    • FacilitiesManagement
    • PatientMoving and Handling
    • Resuscitation/ Basic Life Support
    • Healthand Safety
    • DepartmentalFinancial & Budgetary Controls
    • PatientComplaints procedure
    • FallsManagement programme
  • It isthe responsibility of all UPMC Whitfield Hospital employees to ensure theyare aware of and competent in the reporting of Hospital Risk and allHealth and Safety concerns.
  • Undertakea pro-active approach in achieving and maintaining accreditation standardswithin UPMC Whitfield Hospital and have an in-depth knowledge ofdepartmental and hospital-wide policies.
  • Developappropriate IT skills to enable you to work in an efficient manner withinthe clinical environment.
  • Have aworking knowledge of Isoft, Lab Information System and all otherappropriate systems.
  • Continuallyrisk assesses the unit environment to ensure the safety of all patients,relatives and staff members. Report any accidents, incidents or complaintsaccording to Hospital Guidelines and Policies.
Professional Accountability and Development
  • Ensureyou remain professionally updated and ensure care in all areas isdelivered in line with the latest research to promote evidence-basedpractice. Actively participate in research where appropriate for thebenefit of patients.
  • Providea supportive and learning environment in the Hospital, which enables theeducational and professional development needs of staff to be met.
  • Ensurethat statutory rules, guidelines, and legislation are understood andcomplied with.
  • Ensurethat standards of care are safeguarded, and all staff are aware of theneed for patients and clients. High quality care is recognised as ofprimary importance.
  • Act asa positive role model with regards to the Hospital ethos.
Quality & Audit
  • Participateas required in clinical audit and research activity within the field,promoting a positive attitude towards the implementation of evidence-based practice.
  • Undertakeresearch/ clinical audit as necessary, critically analyse and providewritten reports of the same.
  • Participatein local audits in preparation for annual accreditation.
  • Workclosely with the Quality and Patient Safety team, ensuring the departmentis meeting accreditation standards at all times.
Health & Safety
  • Touphold UPMC Whitfield Hospital's policy requirements in relation to Fire,Infection Prevention and Control and Health and Safety at Work regulationsand to attend updates.
  • Identifypotential risks for all staff, patients and visitors and adhere torelevant incident reporting procedures.
  • Toobserve a general duty of care for the health, safety and well-being ofself, work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital, inaddition to any specific risk management associated with this post.
Qualifications & Experience
  • BeRegistered General Nurse with The Nursing and Midwifery Bord of Ireland(NMBI).
  • PreviousEndoscopy Qualification - desirable.
  • Atleast 1 year's post registration experience - essential.
  • Evidenceof ongoing CPD.

Salary: €37,284.35 - €53,686.64 per annum based on a 37 hour week.
